CC, Yanks go down to Jays

CC Sabathia was chased during a four-run third inning in his return from the disabled list, with Kendrys Morales hitting a two-run single that helped the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Yankees, 4-1, yesterday in New York and end a fivegame losing streak.

Aaron Judge hit his major league-leading 28th home run for the Yankees only run off J.A. Happ (3-5), who allowed four hits in six innings. A 20-game winner last year, Happ has won three of his last four.

New York has lost 15-of21 after a 38-23 start, a slide that began the night Sabathia got hurt. Sabathia (73) was 5-0 with a 0.99 ERA before straining his left hamstring on June 13.

Twins 5, Angels 4 — In Minneapoli­s, Kyle Gibson pitched into the seventh to snap his three-game winless streak, Byron Buxton hit his fifth home run and Minnesota held off Los Angeles for the victory.

Athletics 7, White Sox 6 — Franklin Barreto homered in the ninth inning, Yonder Alonso went deep twice and host Oakland snapped a season-high six-game slide by beating Chicago.

Royals 7, Mariners 3 — Whit Merrifield hit the first pitch of the game from Felix Hernandez for his seventh home run, Mike Moustakas added his 24th and Kansas City beat host Seattle.

National League

Nationals 11, Mets 4 — Daniel Murphy drove in five runs on four hits, Bryce Harper had three hits and two RBI and host Washington routed New York.

Murphy improved his career average to .405 against his former Mets team.

Dodgers 4, Diamondbac­ks 3 — Clayton Kershaw carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and struck out 11 to become the majors’ first 13-game winner, helping Los Angeles beat visiting Arizona in a matchup of the NL’s top two teams.

Marlins 5, Cardinals 2 — Christian Yelich hit a threerun homer, JT Riddle added a two-run single and Jose Urena struck out seven in five solid innings and Miami beat host St. Louis.

Reds 8, Rockies 1 — In Denver, Homer Bailey went six solid innings for his first win since Aug. 12, and Cincinnati ripped Colorado. Jose Peraza, Scott Schebler and Scooter Gennett added homers for the Reds.

Pirates 3, Phillies 0 — Jameson Taillon struck out a career-best nine in five innings, Andrew McCutchen hit a pair of solo homers and Pittsburgh beat host Philadelph­ia.

Interleagu­e

Padres 1, Indians 0 — Cory Spangenber­g drove in the only run with a groundout, and six pitchers combined on a five-hitter in San Diego’s win against host Cleveland.

Indians manager Terry Francona missed the game after he was admitted to the Cleveland Clinic for tests. Francona was hospitaliz­ed twice last month after feeling lightheade­d and having a rapid heart rate.

Rays 6, Cubs 5 — Tim Beckham homered, and Tampa Bay won its reunion with Joe Maddon, beating host Chicago.

The Rays won their first meeting against Maddon since he left them to manage the Cubs following the 2014 season.

Tigers 5, Giants 3 — Victor Martinez homered, Michael Fulmer pitched eight innings and host Detroit snapped San Francisco’s six-game win streak.

Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera left after six innings due to hip tightness.

Astros 16, Braves 4 — Jose Altuve homered and drove in four runs, Josh Reddick hit a grand slam and Houston pounded out 19 hits to beat host Atlanta.

Brewers 6 Orioles 2 — Eric Thames hit a pair of home runs and Jimmy Nelson pitched seven strong innings as host Milwaukee beat Baltimore.
