Relationships have made Mr. Sid a real good fit for 50 years

Luxury menswear store Mr. Sid will mark its 50th anniversary in style tonight with a black-tie soiree at its Newton store hosted by brothers and co-owners Stuart and Barry Segel.

The success of the third-generation, family-owned business can be attributed to relationships, said Barry Segel, 46.

“We certainly are good at what we do, and we carry a quality product,” he said. “But you have to have a rapport with your customers and service them the right way, and eventually you become friends with them and are integrated into their lifestyle.”

And the Segels always try to create a unique in-store experience, he said.

“You hear today in retail the hot word is all about the customer experience and creating the experience, and I feel like we’ve done that since day one,” Segel said, from his father serving bagels and coffee on Saturday mornings to in-store bars and a barbershop to hosting charity events.

Politicians, musicians, athletes and businessmen have been among Mr. Sid customers, including Harry Belafonte, cousin and actor Jason Segel, U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and players Devin McCourty and Rob Gronkowski.

Mr. Sid will open a smaller, 2,000-square-foot Boston store in the Seaport District in November.

“Our demographic is there, as well as the energy,” Segel said. “There’s so much innovation … not to mention all of the business moving down there.”

Men may not be wearing suits five days a week now, but they do value very good quality clothing, including custom made-to-measure pieces, according to Segel.
