FOOTBALL ROUNDUP

Sometimes a coach just gets that gut feeling.

Jacob Rebello checked in for Somerset Berkley with just over five minutes left to play and carried his team to the eventual game-winning touchdown as the Raiders outlasted Old Rochester, 3633, in a back-and-forth affair that locked up the South Coast Conference Large title for the first time in school history.

Somerset Berkley (5-0) transferred to the league this season after winning the Eastern Athletic Conference title in 2016.

Rebello may have been on the field for more than a handful of plays on both sides of the ball, but with 5:33 left Raiders coach Nick Freitas called Rebello’s backfield number for the first time. The senior two-way scrapper took the draw play off right tackle from quarterback Chase Stafford for a 10yard touchdown to give the Raiders their largest lead of the game 36-26.

The touchdown run held up in the end, but only after Old Rochester went down and scored on Harry Smith’s fourth rushing touchdown of the game to cut the deficit to 36-33 with 4:08 left.

The Bulldogs (4-1) pulled their own trickery and Colin Bourgeois picked up the onside kick to set up some home-field theatrics — starting at the Raiders’ 42yard line. But Rebello had things covered for the Bulldogs with two sacks in the final series, including the final play on fourth-and-8 from the 28 to seal the victory.

“It was just crazy with just coming into this division, and thanks to my coaches for putting us into the position to win,” said Rebello. “I thank (the coaches) for having faith and I worked all four years for this moment and I’m just glad it came like this.”

Stafford was the Raiders star in the first half with 166 yards on 6-of-10 passing with three touchdown tosses. Two of them were to wideout Jake Meehan, including the opening 71-yard toss on a go route down the left sideline.

But as the Bulldogs started to figure things out in the secondary, Stafford went to the ground and converted on 2-of-3 fourth-and-long plays using his legs in the second half. Stafford also converted a key third-and-21 scamper for 27 yards to set up Rebello’s draw-play touchdown for the victory.

Stafford finished with 16 carries and 154 yards as well as 174 yards passing for 328 yards of total offense.
