Diehl war chest leads GOP pack

Warren coffers biggest by far

-

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Geoff Diehl raised more than $367,000 from donors in the last fundraising quarter, the most of any GOP candidate in the race, new reports show.

Diehl’s report also showed his campaign is spending nearly the same amount — $345,367 — leaving him with more than $281,000 in the bank at the end of September. He has raised a total of $710,000 since launching his campaign earlier this year.

While Diehl did raise the most from GOP donors, another candidate, John Kingston, contributed $3 million of his own money toward his campaign, leaving him with the most cash in the bank.

Diehl’s fundraising haul is still far behind the Democratic incumbent, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who reported raising more than $3 million in the last quarter, from July through September.

Warren has more than $13 million in cash on hand, swamping any of her GOP opponents.

Diehl, a Whitman state representative who chaired President Trump’s 2016 Massachusetts campaign, received $250 from car dealer Ernie Boch Jr., but most GOP establishment figures have not given him money.

Diehl’s report also shows him accepting more than $500 in 10 separate donations from contributors listed as “Anonymous, Anonymous.”

A campaign spokeswoman said those contributions came in cash from unknown sources. The spokeswoman, Holly Robichaud, said the money will be donated to charities in the next quarter.

“People send cash in the mail without leaving their name,” Robichaud said. “We’re reporting it but we have to donate it. We’re being super correct.”

Diehl’s campaign also reported spending more than $12,000 on polling.

The latest fundraising reports also show another GOP candidate, Beth Lindstrom, a former campaign manager for ex-U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, raising more than $50,000 from donors in the last quarter.

Lindstrom also loaned her campaign $25,000.
