Police yesterday were searching for two suspects who fled the scene of a fatal predawn shooting at the Holiday Inn Express in Dorchester.

Police responded to the hotel, located just steps from Interstate 93 South, at 4:15 a.m. yesterday after receiving a call that someone had been shot.

When they arrived, they found a man in his mid-20s in a fifth-floor room suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, police said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

After the shots, someone pulled a fire alarm leading to what he called a “chaotic scene.”

Two suspects were spotted fleeing the scene, police Commissioner William B. Evans said.

Neither the shooting victim nor any possible suspects were immediately identified.

Evans told reporters at the scene yesterday that the shooting is not believed to be random.

As police combed the hotel yesterday morning, tourists said they were frightened by the hectic early morning crime scene.

“We travel all the time and people are always telling us to be safe,” said a woman who declined to give her name, but said she was stopping in Boston on her way home to Ohio. “We spent two weeks in Portugal and it was perfect. We come to Boston for one night and there’s a (expletive) murder.”

Teenager Sei Nakamura, vacationing with his family from Japan, said, “I thought it was a joke and I didn’t think it was real until the police came. I went to the lobby and there were a lot of police officers and firefighters. In Japan, there’s no guns, so I was very scared.”

Marvin Cunningham, another visitor to Boston, said, “They seemed to search everything pretty thoroughly.”

Cunningham added, “We came downstairs when we heard the alarm. They questioned us, asked us if we saw anything, and then we just went back up to the room.”

Police said the investigation into the shooting is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact BPD detectives at 617-343-4470 or assist anonymously by calling the CrimeStoppers Tip Line at 1 (800) 494-TIPS or by texting the word ‘TIP’ to CRIME (27463).
