Clowns, heroes top Halloween costumes
Pennywise the Dancing Clown, the horrifying character from the recent bigscreen remake of Stephen King’s “It,” is the must-have Halloween costume this year, according to staffers at Boston-area costume shops, who say Wonder Woman outfits, Game of Thrones gear and Hugh Hefner smoking jackets are also in high demand.
“I would say the “It” movie clown and the whole clown movement, with scary clown masks, has been popular,” said Khris Knievil, manager of Dorothy’s Boutique in Boston. “A lot of men are getting the scary clown look this year.”
Knievil said orders for Hugh Hefner-style smoking jackets and Playboy bunny costumes have surged since the beloved Playboy founder passed away last month.
“The guys are getting the smoking jacket, the bachelor’s pipe and the captain’s hat and the girls are getting the bunny look,” he said.
At Boston Costume in Cambridge, Leo Liao and his friends were immediately drawn to a Pennywise clown mask.
“We want to be something frightening,” Liao, a student from China, told the Herald.
Boston University student Jason Adams stopped in to buy a Captain America costume he could wear while trick or treating with his wife and kids in Salem.
“My sons are going as Batman and Spider-Man,” Adams said, adding that his wife was planning to trick or treat as Wonder Woman.
Other popular costumes this season, industry analysts say, include characters from Game of Thrones and Star Wars, pregnant Kardashians and former White House officials, including Sean Spicer, Anthony Scaramucci and Steve Bannon.
