Devils go overtime, stop Sens

John Moore scored 1:20 into overtime and the New Jersey Devils used three unanswered goals to beat the Senators, 5-4, in overtime last night in Ottawa.

This year’s No.1 draft pick Nico Hischier had the first two goals of his NHL career for New Jersey. Kyle Palmieri and Marcus Johansson also scored for the Devils, who improved to 4-0-0 on the road and 6-1-0 overall.

Cory Schneider allowed four goals on 24 shots before leaving with a lower-body injury. Keith Kinkaid started the third period and stopped nine shots. Taylor Hall chipped in with four assists.

Kyle Turris, Derick Brassard, Alex Burrows and Tom Pyatt scored for the Senators, and Craig Anderson made 41 saves.

Lightning 2, Blue Jackets 0 — Mikhail Sergachev scored his first two NHL goals and Andrei Vasilevski­y made 43 saves for his fifth career shutout as Tampa Bay beat host Columbus.

Nikita Kucherov had two assists to push his NHL-leading points total to 14, but his goals streak stopped at seven games.

The Lightning took advantage of the few openings offered by Sergei Bobrovsky, who stopped 19 shots for the Blue Jackets and lost for the first time this season. Columbus had won four straight.

Islanders 4, Rangers 3 — At Madison Square Garden, John Tavares scored in the shootout to lift the Islanders over the Rangers for their eighth win in the last nine games against their struggling crosstown rivals.

Anders Lee, Brock Nelson and Mathew Barzal scored in regulation, and Jaroslav Halak stopped 38 shots to help the Islanders recover after blowing a two-goal lead in the third.

David Desharnais, Mats Zuccarello and Kevin Hayes scored, and Henrik Lundqvist finished with 35 saves for the Rangers, who lost their fifth straight (0-3-2) to fall to 1-5-2 — their worst start in almost 60 years.

Oilers 2, Blackhawks 1 — Mark Letestu scored on a power play with 15.8 seconds left in overtime to give Edmonton the victory in Chicago.

Patrick Maroon also scored, while Cam Talbot made 30 straight saves after giving up a fluke goal to Patrick Kane on Chicago’s first shot, as the Oilers ended a four-game skid.

Blues 4, Avalanche 3 — In Denver, Jaden Schwartz and Vince Dunn scored 52 seconds apart in the second period as St. Louis beat Colorado.

Predators 1, Flyers 0 — Pekka Rinne stopped 28 shots, Colton Sissons scored in the third period and Nashville beat host Philadelph­ia.

Hurricanes 2, Flames 1 — Jeff Skinner had a goal and an assist to help Carolina beat host Calgary, which got a goal from Sean Monahan thanks to an assist by Jaromir Jagr.

Stars 5, Coyotes 4 — In Glendale, Ariz., Tyler Seguin scored a pair of third-period goals and Dallas held off Arizona to send the hosts to its fifth straight defeat.

Jamie Benn had a goal and two assists as Dallas beat the Coyotes for the second time in three days.

Elsewhere in the NHL — Los Angeles Kings center Jeff Carter is out indefinite­ly after undergoing surgery to repair a cut on his left leg. Carter was hurt on a hit by Montreal’s Jeff Petry during the Kings’ 5-1 victory on Wednesday night. Also, the Kings signed defenseman Derek Forbort to a two-year, $5.05 million contract extension and signed veteran center Brooks Laich to a one-year, $650,000 contract.
