Mitchell, BC breeze past So. Carolina St.

Steffon Mitchell scored 21 points, Jordan Chatman had 13 and Boston College breezed to a 91-52 victory over South Carolina State yesterday at Conte Forum.

Ky Bowman added 10 points, graduate transfer Deontae Hawkins had 11 rebounds with five points and Jerome Robinson scored nine points in limited action for the Eagles (2-0).

Janai Raynor Powell led the Bulldogs (0-2) with nine points. They shot only 32.1 percent and were outrebound­ed 50-26.

Eagles coach Jim Christian went deep into his bench late in the first half and played mostly reserves in the final 10 minutes.

The Eagles hit three from beyond the arc during a 15-0 run when they took control early into the opening half, turning a onepoint lead into a 26-10 advantage.

Leading by 17, BC closed the half with a 13-2 spree en route to its 47-19 halftime edge.

The Eagles began the second half by scoring 12 of the first 13 points. Mitchell had five.

Northeaste­rn 83, Wentworth 49 — Shawn Occeus scored 12 points to lead the balanced Huskies (20) over the Leopards at Matthews Arena.

Jason Ganley scored 17 points to lead Wentworth.

UMass-Lowell 102, UMass-Boston 63 — Ryan Jones scored 23 points and the River Hawks (1-1) broke open a tie game in the second half with a 31-1 run in dropping the visiting Beacons.

Charles Mitchell scored 17 points to lead UMB.

Hartford 80, Gordon 63 — In West Hartford, Conn., John Carroll led a balanced attack with 15 points and the Hawks (2-0) dropped the Fighting Scots.

Eric Demers led Gordon with 23 points.

Kentucky 73, Vermont 69 — Hamido Diallo scored 16 points and the No. 5 Wildcats (2-0) held off the Catamounts in Lexington, Ky.

Trae Bell-Haynes scored 16 points to lead UVM.

Wisconsin 89, Yale 61 — In Madison, Wis., Khalil Iverson led the Badgers (2-0) with 17 points as they cruised to the win against the Bulldogs.

Rutgers 71, Central Conn. 67 — Mike Williams had 23 points and four steals off the bench to lead the Scarlet Knights (2-0) past the Blue Devils in Piscataway, N.J.

Bentley 112, Concordia (N.Y.) 65 — Chris Hudson poured in 25 points to help the Falcons (2-0) drop the Clippers in Waltham.

Merrimack 85, Holy Family 69 — Ryan Boulter exploded for 38 points as the Warriors (2-0) drilled the Tigers (0-2) in Philadelph­ia.

Women’s basketball

Dartmouth 68, Boston College 57 — Cy Lippold netted 16 points as the Big Green (2-0) caged the Eagles in Hanover, N.H.

Milan Bolden-Morris led BC with 16 points.

UConn 78, Stanford 53 — Crystal Dangerfiel­d scored 24 points and Katie Lou Samuelson added 21 to help the top-ranked Huskies (1-0) drub the No. 10 Cardinal in Columbus, Ohio.

Tufts 0, St. Joseph’s (Maine) 0 — Conner Mieth stopped two penalty kicks as the Jumbos (15-1-3) edged the Monks, 4-2, in the shootout in the second round of the NCAA Division 3 tournament in Medford.

Brandeis 1, Rutgers-Newark 0 — Mike Lynch’s second-half goal lifted the Judges (15-4-0) past the Scarlet Raiders (20-3-1) in an NCAA Div. 4 second-rounder in Waltham.
