UNH advances in FCS play
Trevor Knight threw for 299 yards and a touchdown, Evan Gray scored on a short run with 1:04 remaining, and New Hampshire beat Central Connecticut, 14-0, yesterday in the first round of the FCS playoffs in Durham, N.H.

CCSU’s Tajik Bagley intercepted a pass in the end zone and the Blue Devils took over at their 20 with 5:05 left in the game. But the Wildcats got it right back as Jared Kuehl recovered a fumble and Gray sealed it five plays later.
UNH (8-4) will play fourth-seeded Central Arkansas (10-1) next Saturday.
Assumption 45, Findlay 26 — Deonte Harris had a monstrous second half with four touchdowns for the Greyhounds (11-1) in the NCAA Division 2 playoff win against the Oilers (103) in Worcester.
Carlins Platel of Everett capped the scoring for Assumption with a 72-yard pick-6 with 3:22 to play.
Dylan Oxsen of Plymouth had a TD run for the Hounds, who face Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the quarterfinals next Saturday.
Delaware Valley 37, Husson 15 — Dashawn Darden threw for 319 yards and three scores as the Aggies (12-0) advanced to the NCAA Div. 3 quarterfinals with a win over the Eagles (10-2) in Doylestown, Pa.
Ty Bassett of Dracut returned a kickoff 93 yards for a Husson TD, then rushed for a two-point conversion.
Men’s hockey
UMass 6, Quinnipiac 3 — Niko Rufo scored a hat trick to help the Minutemen (7-6-0) sweep the weekend from the Bobcats (5-7-1) in Amherst.
Cornell 4, BU 3 — Dante Fabbro had a goal plus two assists but the No.19 Terriers (6-8-1) fell to the No.7 Big Red (9-1-0) in New York.
UNH 4, Yale 0 — Daniel Tirone made 34 saves to backstop the nonleague shutout for the Wildcats (74-1) against the Bulldogs (36-0) in New Haven, Conn.
Maine 4, RPI 2 — Mitchell Fossier’s third-period goal lifted the Black Bears (5-7-0) over the Engineers (2-9-3) in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Clarkson 4, Providence 2 — The No. 5 Golden Knights (12-3-1) clipped the No. 10 Friars (8-5-1) in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Women’s hockey
NU 6, Minnesota State 1 — Denisa Krizova notched a hat trick to lead the Huskies (9-72) to a win over the Mavericks (2-13-1) in Arlington, Va.
Wisconsin 4, BU 2 — Victoria Bach lit the lamp twice but the Terriers (5-7-2) fell to the top-ranked Badgers (17-1-0) in Arlington, Va.
Harvard 5, UNH 3 — Val Turgeon scored twice and Kat Hughes had a hat trick for the Crimson (5-3-1) during this nonleague win over the Wildcats (6-5-5) at BrightLandry Hockey Center.
Men’s basketball
BYU 68, UMass 66 — Yoeli Childs scored 18 points and the game-winning dunk and the Cougars (4-2) rallied to beat the Minutemen (3-3) in the Barclays Center Classic in New York.
Furman 78, Northeastern 67 — Devin Sibley scored 22 points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds to help the Paladins (4-2) roll to a victory over the Huskies (2-4) in the PK80 Invitational in Nashville, Tenn.
Providence 86, BC 66 — Rodney Bullock had 20 points and netted the 1,000th point in his career as the Friars (5-1) ran past the Eagles (5-2) in Providence. Ky Bowman and Deontae Hawkins each scored 19 for BC.
Fairfield 75, Gardner-Webb 64 — Tyler Nelson of Bradford scored 26 points and the Stags (3-2) topped the Bulldogs (2-5) in Dayton, Ohio.
Albany 78, Holy Cross 62 — In Worcester, Joe Cremo scored 30 points as the Great Danes (6-0) beat the Crusaders (2-3) to continue their best start in 32 years.
Women’s basketball
UConn 96, Michigan State 62 — Azura Stevens reached 1,000 points for her career as the top-ranked Huskies (5-0) beat the Spartans (41) at the PK80 Invitational in Eugene, Ore.
Houston 72, NU 64 — Gabby Giacone had 12 points with 12 rebounds but the Huskies (3-3) dropped a nonleague game at the UMass Thanksgiving Classic to the Cougars (4-2) in Amherst.
UMass 64, Liberty 61 — Paige McCormick drained a right-corner 3-pointer as time expired to lift the Minutewomen (3-3) over the Flames (1-4) in Amherst.
Virginia 50, Harvard 48 — Katie Benzan and Madeline Raster each had 11 points for the Crimson (3-3), but the Cavaliers (3-3) prevailed in Charlottesville, Va.
Men’s soccer
Indiana 2, UNH 1 — Jacob Gould of Exeter, N.H. scored only the fifth goal all season allowed by the second-ranked Hoosiers (17-0-5), but Cory Thomas and Francesco Moore each scored for the hosts in this NCAA Division 1 tournament win over the Wildcats (13-4-5) in Bloomington, Ind.
