William A. Abbott Jr., 87, resident of Stoneham

William A. “Bill” Abbott Jr. of Stoneham died Sunday at his home. He was 87.

He was born in Chelsea and raised in Winthrop.

He graduated from Winthrop High School and Franklin Institute and attended Bentley College.

He was employed by Industrial Sales for Metropolit­an Pipe for 20 years, Walden Supply for 15 years and F.W. Webb for five years.

Mr. Abbott also worked at Bob’s Market in Melrose for 10 years.

He was a member of the Winthrop Elks and Winthrop Golf Club for many years.

He enjoyed traveling to Disney World and the Bahamas, cookouts with family and friends, had a great sense of humor and loved spending time working on his lawn and gardening. He was an avid Boston sports fan.

Mr. Abbott is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rose M. (Murphy); two daughters, Rose G. Conneely of Stoneham and Julie A. Kirby of Melrose; two sons, William A. III of Tewksbury and Jeffrey J. of Stoneham; a brother, Daniel of Winthrop; and six grandchild­ren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at St. Mary’s Church, Melrose. Burial will be private. Arrangemen­ts by Gately Funeral Home, Melrose.
