Catch a cheap lift to the slopes

- By MOIRA McCARTHY

Getting back and forth for a ski day this early winter is as easy as calling your driver and handing him — get ready for it — a cool $5 for a round-trip ride.

Boston’s newest transportation company, Skedaddle, is offering $5 round-trip rides to and from your choice of Loon Mountain or Mount Sunapee Resort every Saturday in January and February.

Company founder Adam Nestler said it’s their way of introducing their new method of getting around to ski and adventure lovers in the greater Boston area.

Nestler and business partner Brad Werntz started the company after living in Boston, without a car, for some time.

“We found it wasn’t easy to get around outside of the city,” said Nestler.

And actually, the idea of Skedaddle was born in ski weekend traffic.

“Brad Werntz is an even bigger skier than me,” said Nestler. “So he was sitting in traffic either to or from the mountains one day and he thought, ‘There has got to be a better way. We are all going to the same place. Why aren’t we going together?’ ”

From that came the company. The idea of Skedaddle is unlike Uber, Lyft, taxicabs or even your local bus line. What happens is this: You decide you need to get somewhere (a concert, a ballgame, a party, a mountain, a beach; anywhere), so you set a route on their app. Once 10 people join in on your route, the route is scheduled. The person who started the route rides free and everyone else rides at a fraction of the cost of most other transportation. Riders are picked up and dropped off at agreed-upon spots, and are transported in luxury coaches to their destination and back.

For the January and February offer, the routes are set and no minimum is required for them to go. Skiers and riders will be picked up at 6:30 a.m. at Pavement Coffee House in Boston. The coaches leave the resorts at 5:30 p.m. and transport you back. All for $5. That’s less than would pay for gas.

While the concept was created for those who live in the city and don’t own cars, the company is hoping more and more people will choose them as a comfortable, easy option.

The ride, in quality coaches, is comfortable, smooth and fun.

“Everyone is heading to ski, so it’s a natural environment to meet and get to know like-minded people,” said Nestler. “We really believe the journey should be as enjoyable as the destination.”

Skiers and riders can set routes to other ski resorts and destinations by following the instructions on their app as well. But only the Loon and Sunapee routes fall under the $5 round-trip price for now.
