Brockton coach Bob Boen has seen BC High point guard Travis Evee dismantle the Boxers in recent years.

Last night, Evee (25 points) almost gave the Eagles another win in the series. But the Boxers had a response, using a strong third quarter to survive a late BC High rally for a 5553 nonleague boys basketball victory in Dorchester.

“I think the defense again was the key,” Boen said. “We shut Evee down enough. He’s a great player, and he’s killed us for at least three years now. I thought we did well on him the first half and early in the third quarter.”

After poor shooting from both sides in the first half, Brockton (4-0) created separation in the third quarter with a 14-3 run.

Jarice Harris (10 points) sparked the run with a 3-pointer before Segun Okunlola and Taisaun Glenn-Doherty (eight points, 12 rebounds) controlled the offensive glass to extend Brockton’s lead to 42-30 late in the third.

“We came out and we made some really good shots (in the third quarter),” Boen said. “It seemed like we finally got into our offense. First half, it was very mixed up.”

A trifecta by Jaelen Lee gave Brockton its largest lead, 50-33, just seconds into the fourth quarter before BC High (1-1) stormed back.

Evee, who was held to just nine points through three quarters, got red-hot and scored 16 in the frame including the last 11 for the Eagles. In the final 30 seconds, he drained a corner 3-pointer before stealing the ball and sinking a free throw to get the Eagles within 55-53.

Evee then took a charge to give BC High the ball, but Marcus Azor blocked the Eagles’ final attempt to seal the Brockton win.

“(Evee) got us back into the game,” Eagles coach Bill Loughnane said. “Unfortunately it wasn’t enough.”

In the Bay State Conference, Ethan Wright dropped 27 points and grabbed nine boards as Newton North (1-1) coasted past Brookline, 76-39 . . . . Senior Eddie Hassell scored 16 points as Milton (2-1) defeated Walpole, 52-44.

Jimmy Arneil drained a 3-pointer in the final second to lift Mystic Valley (2-1) to a 77-75 win against Commonwealth Athletic Conference rival Greater Lowell (2-1). Alfie Tsang had 20 points and 10 rebounds in the victory.

In the Cape Ann League, Jake Lanciani did most of the damage with 25 points, helping Hamilton-Wenham (2-0) escape with a 59-55 win against Masconomet.

Sophomore Bensley Joseph tallied 25 points as Arlington (2-0) took down Middlesex League rival Melrose, 53-45.

Girls basketball

Grace Bennis scored 24 points, including 18 in the fourth quarter, to lift Hingham (2-1) to a 48-37 win against Hanover in the Patriot League.

Talia Mamayek (10 points, 13 rebounds) knocked down the winning shot with 11 seconds left to lift Mystic Valley (3-0) to a 56-53 win against Greater Lowell in the Commonwealth Athletic Conference.

Veronica Burton’s 15 points carried Newton South (4-0) past Weston, 65-30 in the Dual County League. . . . Kalkidan Mamo had 19 points as Cambridge (2-2) defeated Bedford, 55-42.

Boys hockey

James Demeo scored four goals and Chris Walsh added the other to lead Bedford (1-1-0) to a 5-2 nonleague victory against Norton.

Al Arno had a hat trick and David Mega netted the game-winner as Natick rallied past Winchester, 5-4. Dillon Arno also scored for the RedHawks (3-0-0).
