BOLD & BEAUTIFUL

Designers saturate Fall 2018 collections in bright colors

- By GRETTA MONAHAN

All things must come to an end, even something as high-energy as New York Fashion Week. As the shows wrapped up for Fall 2018's vibrant collections, I couldn't help but make some notes on the trends that spoke to me most. First of all, color was put to great use in so many shows. The boldness of using big brights to create energy and convey confidence can be so stunning.

Carolina Herrera did it with an acid yellow duster trimmed in an animal print fur collar, and with a twist-waisted midi dress, one half in loud orange and the other half in an equally loud pink, but all of it kept soft with a ladylike drape and flowing sleeves.

I found myself obsessed by the saturated hues at Christian Siriano, too. His glam evening collection included scarlet, big-belted fur coats and gowns in stunning turquoise satin.

At the Tibi show, designer Amy Smilovic did it right by taking her clean, modern style and injecting it with a palette of brights like orange sweaters over electric blue skirts. And like Herrera, she played with brilliant acid yellow coats to very, very cool effect.

Designer Tanya Taylor wowed me. She creates her highly colored prints in her New York studio, and then turns the spirited, lively creations into absolutely wearable but gutsy pieces. I loved her hot pink floral midi dresses, shoulderbaring plaid blouses over long pencil skirts, and flowing sleeveless frocks in abstract geometric-patterns.

Victoria Beckham's cool military-inspired coats stood out, too. And you can bet I'm going to line up to get my hands on one of her enormous, colorful bags that you can fit almost everything in your life in. When practicality meets such innovative styling like that, you can't keep me away.

Other noteworthy hits: Prabal Gurung's cable knits and puffer jackets in vibrant purples and pinks. Sign me up. And Tom Ford's big patchworks and in-your-face bright colors and pop prints? Bring it on — and then some. As far as my wardrobe is concerned, fall can't get here fast enough.
