CARELL ROLE IS BOLD AND ‘BEAUTIFUL’

-

There’s more drama coming from Steve Carell … and it’s all on screen. The actor and Marshfield business owner, who mostly dealt in comedy, is starring in the upcoming heavy movie “Beautiful Boy,” which was just announced for release on Oct. 12.

The film, hailing from Amazon Studios and directed by Felix van Groeningen, is based on a duo of best-selling memoirs, “Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction” by David Sheff (played by Carell) and “Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines” by son Nic Sheff (played by Timothee Chalamet). The stories, told from the perspectives of father and son, documents the ebbs and flows — the relapse and recovery — that an entire family endures as one of their own struggles with a meth addiction.

We’re proud to report that Carell isn’t the only one with local roots appearing in “Beautiful Boy.” The movie will also feature Maura Tierney, the former “ER” star whose more recent work included roles in “The Affair,” for which she won a Golden Globe, and “The Good Wife.” As gray-haired Bay Staters may recall, the Hyde Park native is also the daughter of the late Joseph Tierney, who served as City Council president during the ’70s and ’80s.

And to round out the pic’s cast, there’s a couple of actors who weren’t blessed with Massachusetts roots: Amy Ryan, who played opposite Carell in “The Office” as Holly, his character’s eventual fiancee, and Timothy Hutton, who’s also going to be in Amazon’s upcoming series “Jack Ryan” with Newton’s own John Krasinski.

The movie has yet to release any trailer or teaser, but we’re willing to bet that, boy, it will be beautiful.
