LOVE FOR THE NRA? KNOPE
Poehler warns pro-gun group to step away from `Parks' GIF
Well, we now know how Amy Poehler feels about the NRA.
The Burlington native passed on some choice words for the organization after it used a GIF of her “Parks and Recreation” character, Leslie Knope, to thank one of its supporters.
“Parks and Rec” co-creator Michael Schur passed along a message from Poehler in a tweet yesterday, writing, “Amy isn’t on Twitter, but she texted me a message: ‘Can you tweet the NRA for me and tell them I said (expletive) off?’”
“I would prefer you not use a GIF from a show I worked on to promote your pro-slaughter agenda,” Schur also wrote in his tweet, asking the NRA to remove the GIF directed at conservative political commentator Dana Loesch.
The use of the GIF — which was literally just a loop of Knope pointing and saying “thank you” — also didn’t sit well with Poehler’s former costar Nick Offerman. Apparently, the burly comedian doesn’t share the signature political views of his own “Parks and Rec” character, Ron Swanson.
“Our goodhearted show and especially our Leslie Knope represent the opposite of your pro-slaughter agenda,” Offerman tweeted to the NRA. “Take it down and also please eat (expletive).”
And acting as the family spokesman, Poehler’s younger brother and fellow comedian/ actor, Greg, also took to social media to sound off on the GIF-gate.
“I can confirm that the entire Poehler family despises the NRA and everything it stands for, but, hey, cool meme,” he replied to the NRA’s tweet.
Celebs making their political opinions clear is nothing new. But what really stumps us about this scenario: Out of the infinite GIFs on the internet, why did the NRA pick one of Knope, a chipper liberal who’s all about bureaucracy? If it’s a “Parks and Rec” reference they wanted, an image of a gun-wielding Ron Swanson — or his in-depth explanation of a Sig Sauer .22 caliber Mosquito, which he gave as a birthday gift — would have been spot on.
