ADDING TO THE MADNESS

-

A wayward commuter lit up social media for his reckless underground trek in the Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill Jr. Tunnel on a bicycle.

He moved at a decent clip and appeared to exit Interstate 93 safely late Sunday afternoon, according to video footage of his journey and transportation officials. One car was seen veering to the left to avoid him.

“It happens on occasion. Sometimes we see coyotes in the tunnels, sometimes bikers,” a MassDOT official told the Herald.

State troopers are usually dispatched to swiftly escort the rogue travelers off the highway, but this guy was quick to disappear before being detected.

An overhead camera video of his ride was posted to the Boston subreddit on Reddit, an online forum, where comments ranged from guessing the hooded rider was on a rented bike to saying it was a savvy post-St. Patrick’s Day detour.

“Hopefully this doesn’t turn into a trend of any kind because people will (expletive) die,” one Reddit observer pointed out.

“Avoiding a highway onramp is not hard when sober,” another said.

“Or they just used google maps more likely,” joked a Reddit member.

“Really stupid, but to be fair, dude is booking it. How fast was everyone else going?” said another, as others added the bicyclist had a blinking rear light that probably helped prevent cars slamming into him.

“He almost started a death wobble for a second,” one person observed. The bicyclist did seem to momentarily lose speed and direction, but he recovered.

And, no, he was not wearing a helmet.
