Not even heavy Friday afternoon traffic could slow down red-hot Milford.

The Scarlet Hawks — No. 1 in the Boston Herald softball rankings — arrived at Newton North well past the originally scheduled start time of 3:45 p.m., hopped off the bus and did not miss a beat.

The defending Division 1 state champions scored three runs in the top of the first, four runs in the fifth, and added five more runs in the sixth while starting pitcher Kelley Reichert went the distance in the circle to help brush away the nonleague Tigers, 13-0 in six innings.

With the victory, Milford improved to 14-0 overall and extended its winning streak to 38 games.

“First and foremost, (Newton North) is a terrific team and we knew coming in that this was going to be a tough game, so we had to do everything we could to get off the bus and start fast,” said Milford coach Steve DiVitto. “Our girls just continued to push and push and we were able to extend our lead as it went on.”

Leadoff hitter Kate Irwin started the game with a sharp single off Tigers starter Mia Patriacca before a walk to Emily Piergustavo brought up Jess Tomaso, who plated Irwin with a hit to center. A passed ball scored Piergustavo to make it 2-0, and Shannon Cormier’s RBI single gave the Scarlet Hawks the early 3-0 advantage.

Newton North (8-4) threatened with two outs in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases on two hits and a walk, but Reichert fanned the next batter to escape damage.

Milford added another run in the third when Cormier (four RBI) scored from first on a three-base throwing error before RBI hits by Emily Hartman and Sabrina Haarstick (three-run double) pushed the lead to 8-0 in the fifth.

A Cormier three-run double highlighted the Scarlet Hawks’ five-run sixth inning before Reichert closed the door on the Tigers with a clean bottom of the inning that closed out the win, enacting the mercy rule.

“We were all pumped for this game,” said Cormier. “We were motivated to move on with our winning and that’s what we did today.”

In other nonleague action, Meghan Gorman belted a walkoff three-run homer to propel King Philip (12-2) over Dighton-Rehoboth, 4-2. . . . Tianna Dawe tossed a one-hitter as Peabody (12-0) posted a 6-1 decision against Wakefield.
