Revisiting Roseanne ...

-

In the May 30 issue of the Herald, Mark Perigard wrote, “Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences.” I agree with that. However, consequences should fit the crime, and should be administered somewhat equally.

For the crime of a tweet that was racist and noxious but, let’s face it, ultimately hurt no one (crass composes the majority of the matter in the Twitter universe), the TV show “Roseanne” has been canceled, the actress was let go by her agency, and reruns of the original show have been removed from Hulu and the Laff Network and will likely disappear. Meanwhile, in the online universe, the liberal lynch mob can scarcely contain its glee.

Did the black comedian Michael Che face any consequences for calling President Trump a “cheap cracker” on national TV last year? Yes, if by consequences you mean being lauded by the same left-leaning media and stars now eager to see Ms. Barr’s career dismantled.

It is clear that Ms. Barr is being punished not merely for her odious tweet, but because the target of that tweet was a high-ranking member of the Obama administration and because on the “Roseanne” reboot Ms. Barr portrays a Trump supporter as a human being and not someone who is evil, insane or both.

Now everyone can go safely back to their “Trump supporter bad, Trump resister good” worldview.
