In a pitchers’ duel between two quality baseball programs, No. 12 Braintree came out victorious as John Tellier and Kyle Roach outdueled Silver Lake’s Michael Quigley to give the Wamps a 2-0 victory over the No.5 seeds in a Division 1 South first-round contest yesterday in Kingston.

“He set the tone early and threw a lot of strikes early. He battled against a good lineup.” Braintree coach Bill O’Connell said following 51⁄3 strong innings from his starter Tellier.

Tellier didn’t allow a hit in the first three innings while Quigley stranded five runners in the opening two frames. But the Wamps (129) finally broke through in the fourth.

With Quigley on the cusp of escaping another threat, Braintree junior Jack Collins and senior captain Alex Kennedy (single, two walks) each swatted clutch RBI singles to put the Wamps up. Marcos Carnes (two singles, walk) and Jackson Duffy (two doubles, single) got on a with a single and double, respectively.

In the bottom of the fourth, Silver Lake (13-7) looked to answer right back. Jake Armstrong one-hopped the left field fence, sliding into second for the Lakers’ first hit of the game. They soon loaded the bases with nobody out, but Tellier and his defense survived the jam, not allowing a run.

“Hopefully (the win) is a confidence booster,” said O’Connell. “The first game of the tournament is always the toughest one, especially down here in Silver Lake.”
