PAUL PIERCE, FOR THE WIN

- BY OLIVIA VANNI

Celtics legend Paul Pierce has apparently already tried his hand in coaching, surprising a bunch of rec basketball players in Georgia who got to live out their proathlete fantasies.

“Little do they know, The Truth is here coaching,” Pierce said in a video that documented last month’s ambush, which also included fellow former NBA star Baron Davis.

Pierce and Davis strutted into the gym at Morehouse College in their courtside finest to treat 16 guys, who were under the impression that they were about to play a casual pick-up game, to the full NBA package. They were handed snazzy uniforms, complete with corporate sponsor logos; had their every play announced by Ryan Cameron, the man behind the mic during the Atlanta Hawks games; and relished in the cheers from a rowdy fans who filled the stands. And let’s not forget how Pierce and Davis had command of the clipboards, giving them pointers throughout the entire game.

After ambushing his half of the players and shocking them senseless, Pierce personally wasted no time before jumping into mentor mode during the event orchestrated by Bengay and the National Panhellenic Council of Greater Atlanta. He prepped his team with a motivating and accurately ageappropriate pep talk.

“This is what I’m working with here?” he asked the amateur ballers in the locker room. “I need everybody here to go hard. Don’t worry about how we’re going to feel in the morning. I know we’ve got a bunch of old guys in here.”

Apparently, that chat — and Pierce’s animated antics near the bench — made its intended impact. His team was victorious at the end of the event, defeating the guys under Davis’ direction. To celebrate, the players performed a little victory number, which almost looked like the middle-aged men stole a page from the Celtics dancers’ choreograph book.
