The head of school at Boston University Academy is out of a job at the small, private high school within the university, school officials said yesterday.

Ari Betof had been at the helm of BUA since 2015.

“We have separated Dr. Ari Betof from employment as Head of School at Boston University Academy,” Boston University spokesman Colin Riley confirmed in a statement. “While it is our policy not to comment on personnel matters, we can say that the reason for the separation does not involve any current or former BUA student or other members of the BUA community.

“We will begin our search for the new Head of School immediately.”

In a statement to the Herald, Betof said, “It has been an honor to serve as the Head of School for Boston University Academy (“BUA”), working with its enormously talented students and faculty. I am proud of what we — together as a community — have accomplished. Whatever my disagreements with BU over the decision made, I will continue to cheer on the students of BUA and its faculty as they set the bar high and do amazing work.”

Assistant Head of School Dr. Rosemary White is serving as interim head as the school begins a national search for a new permanent leader. The goal is to have a new leader in place by next summer, school officials said.

In a letter to the school community, BU Provost Jean Morrison said, “I look forward to working with the BUA community to identify the next head and am confident that, with Rosemary’s leadership, we will be able to sustain the continued momentum and progress of the academy during the upcoming academic year.”
