LA DA: Browner tried to kill ex

Prosecutor­s say former Patriots cornerback Brandon Browner has been charged with trying to kill his ex-girlfriend after breaking into her Southern California home.

Browner, who won Super Bowls with the Pats and Seattle Seahawks, was arrested Sunday east of Los Angeles.

The LA County District Attorney’s Office says the 33-year-old was charged yesterday with attempted murder, first-degree residentia­l robbery and other counts. It wasn’t immediatel­y clear if he has a lawyer. Arraignmen­t is scheduled for July 30.

Prosecutor­s say Browner broke into the apartment, chased and dragged the woman and then tried to smother her in a carpet. Prosecutor­s say he also stole a Rolex watch valued at about $20,000 . . . .

Police acknowledg­ed that a woman was assaulted during a home invasion at a suburban Atlanta house owned by NFL star LeSean McCoy, hours after graphic posts on social media accused the Buffalo Bills running back of bloodying his former girlfriend.

McCoy denied allegation­s posted on social media accusing him of hurting his former girlfriend.

Ronaldo exits Real Madrid for Juventus

Cristiano Ronaldo is leaving Real Madrid to join Italian club Juventus, bringing to an end a hugely successful nine-year spell in Spain. Madrid said it has reached an agreement with Juventus after a request by Ronaldo. According to Italian media reports, Juventus is paying Madrid $123 million for the 33-year-old forward . . . .

Manchester City has signed Riyad Mahrez for a club-record $80 million as it further strengthen­s its team after winning the Premier League title. The 27-year-old Algeria winger was an integral part of Leicester’s astonishin­g run to the title in 2016.

Kucherov inks rich extension with Bolts

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed forward Nikita Kucherov to an eight-year contract extension worth an average of $9.5 million in salary and annual bonuses. The 25-year-old would have been a restricted free agent next summer with one year left on a deal that will pay him nearly $4.8 million for the 2018-19 season . . . .

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed veteran Lance Stephenson and second-round pick Svi Mykhailiuk.

Stephenson agreed to a one-year, $4.5 million deal.

Gaviria wins Tour de France stage

Colombia’s Fernando Gaviria won for the second time in four stages at the Tour de France, while Olympic champion Greg Van Avermaet kept the leader’s yellow jersey.

Gaviria won Stage 4 after edging world champion Peter Sagan in a sprint finish to the flat 121-mile leg from La Baule to Sarzeau . . . .
