Cards win for new manager

Matt Carpenter and Dexter Fowler homered to give interim manager Mike Shildt a win in his first game as the Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds, 6-4, yesterday in St. Louis.

Shildt took over for Mike Matheny, who was fired late Saturday after six-plus seasons at the helm.

Tommy Pham broke out of a 0-for-20 slump with a two-run, go-ahead single for the Cardinals, who snapped a six-game home losing skid.

John Gant (3-3) picked up the win with four hitless innings of relief. He struck out four and walked two.

Matheny fashioned a 591-474 mark in six-plus seasons. The Cardinals made the playoffs in each of his first four seasons but failed to reach the postseason in the last two.

Marlins 10, Phillies 5 — Brian Anderson hit a three-run homer in an eight-run fifth inning, and host Miami overcame a five-run deficit to beat Philadelph­ia.

Braves 5, Diamondbac­ks 1— Julio Teheran pitched six-plus scoreless innings, and Atlanta used a fourrun third inning to beat Patrick Corbin and visiting Arizona.

Nationals 6, Mets 1 — Daniel Murphy and Trea Turner each hit two-run singles in Washington’s five-run seventh inning during this win over host New York.

Pirates 7, Brewers 6 — Josh Bell hit a game-ending two-run double in the 10th inning to lift host Pittsburgh over Milwaukee and cap a five-game sweep.

Cubs 7, Padres 4 — Jon Lester won for the eighth time in nine starts, Jason Heyward drove in two runs and visiting Chicago rolled to a sweep of San Diego.

American League

Tigers 6, Astros 3 — John Hicks hit one of four home runs off Justin Verlander as Detroit snapped a sixgame losing streak with a win over host Houston. This was Verlander’s first time facing his former team since being traded to Houston last year.

Indians 5, Yankees 2 — Michael Brantley homered leading off the eighth inning as Cleveland went into the break with a win over New York to split their four-game series in Cleveland.

Carlos Carrasco (11-5) earned his first win in relief since July 19, 2014. Cody Allen struck out two in the ninth and got his 20th save in 21 opportunit­ies.

White Sox 10, Royals 1 — Daniel Palka and Yoan Moncada each homered and Lucas Giolito tossed two-hit ball into the seventh inning to lift host Chicago over struggling Kansas City. Moncada was 3-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored a day after leaving a game with a bruised right knee.

Orioles 6, Rangers 5 — Manny Machado homered before making an early exit on a wet day, Adam Jones hit a three-run double and Baltimore rallied past visiting Texas.

Twins 11, Rays 7 — In Minneapoli­s, Brian Dozier hit a grand slam in the 10th inning to give Minnesota a win over Tampa Bay and cap a testy, back-and-forth finish that featured four lead changes from the bottom of the seventh on.

Interleagu­e

Rockies 4, Mariners 3 — All-Star Trevor Story led off the ninth inning with his 20th homer as Colorado completed a series sweep of Seattle in Denver.

Athletic 6, Giants 2 — Stephen Piscotty homered for the fifth time in nine games as visiting Oakland beat San Francisco.

Dodgers 5, Angels 3 — Yasmani Grandal homered, Enrique Hernandez hit a solo shot in the seventh inning for the goahead run, and the host Dodgers rallied for a win over the Angels to gain a split in the Freeway Series in Los Angeles.
