Records: Carman bought gun days before millionaire grandfather’s slay
Nathan Carman, rescued at sea after an illfated fishing trip that left his mother missing, bought a rifle about a month before his millionaire grandfather was murdered, new court documents show.
That weapon, now missing, used the same caliber bullets found in the Dec. 20, 2013, shooting death of John Chakalos in Windsor, Conn., police have said. The 87-year-old was shot three times.
The documents — complete with receipts — state Carman bought a Sig Sauer 716 Patrol .308 caliber rifle at Shooters Outpost in Hookset, N.H., on Nov. 11, 2013.
The bill was for $2,193 and included a rifle “cleaning kit” as well as the weapon, records filed in U.S. District Court in Rhode Island yesterday show. He paid cash.
Carman, 24, is considered a suspect in his grandfather’s death — an accusation he has denied.
Carman is the sole heir of his missing mother, Linda Carman, 54, who has not been seen since Sept. 18, 2016, when the two went tuna fishing off Block Island. He has claimed that their boat — the “Chicken Pox” — sank, leaving him adrift at sea in a life raft for a week. He has not faced any charges in that case and has denied any wrongdoing.
He is now seeking his mother’s share of the family’s $44 million estate. His three aunts are fighting him over it in a New Hampshire court.
The Vermont man is now being ordered to testify about the gun he purchased by the insurance company for his sunken boat that is fighting a claim. They want him to come to court, with the gun, “without ammunition.”
