Enforce immigration laws

-

The protection of the citizenry is the primary charge of our government and when it fails, due to the whims of political and cultural interests, lives are affected and sometimes lost.

On Sunday, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, who had recently been arrested in Newport News, Va., on an abduction charge, allegedly stabbed members of a fishing boat crew while at sea with a knife and a hammer, killing one of them.

According to The Associated Press, prosecutors say Franklin Freddy Meave Vazquez, 27, was charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the attack. Vazquez was a member of the crew on the Virginia-based fishing vessel Captain Billy Haver while underway about 55 miles off Nantucket.

A release from the U.S. attorney’s office reads: “It is alleged that at some point in the afternoon, Vazquez assaulted another crew member on board with a hammer in one hand and a knife in the other. The victim then saw that another crew member was lying on the deck bleeding. Vazquez then struck a third crew member. It is further alleged that Vazquez then climbed up the mast of the ship as the others onboard tried to capture him.”

This vicious, bloody attack is just the most recent in a series of crimes that either feature someone in the country illegally or an assailant who should not have been free due to the severity of previous crimes. In this instance, both appear to be the case.

Enough is enough. We must enforce all of our immigration laws or change them. A man is dead and others injured because the system failed them. Our elected leaders need to respect our laws and respect law enforcement enough to let them do their jobs.

Some elected leaders have called for the abolishment of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement because of the separation policy on the Southern border. That shameless opportunism is also disingenuous as ICE merely enforces federal laws governing border control. One would hope lawmakers would know that.

Government has failed when an illegal immigrant is allowed to stay in the country due to political sensitivity and then harms an American citizen. Our government’s constituency is its citizens, not interlopers who’ve gamed the system. We’ve come to a point where many politicians place law breakers on a pedestal and cast law enforcement as sinister.

Progressivism is the toxic ideology at the core of this warped approach to immigration and criminal justice, where some are valued more than others based on their position on an intersectionality leaderboard.

It must stop. Politicians need to follow the law, not their progressive sensibilities, and voters need to hold them accountable.
