Rent vouch­ers avail­able for home­less vets

The Prov­i­dence VA Med­i­cal Cen­ter says more hous­ing vouch­ers are avail­able to help home­less veter­ans in Rhode Is­land and Mass­a­chu­setts pay rent.

The med­i­cal cen­ter says lo­cal pub­lic hous­ing au­thor­i­ties re­ceived nearly $220,000 to sup­port 27 ren­tal as­sis­tance vouch­ers. The fund­ing was al­lo­cated through the U.S. De­part­ment of Hous­ing and Ur­ban De­vel­op­ment and U.S. De­part­ment of Veter­ans Af­fairs Sup­port­ive Hous­ing pro­gram.

The cen­ter says there are now 436 vouch­ers avail­able in to­tal for veter­ans in Rhode Is­land, south­east­ern Mass­a­chu­setts and Cape Cod.

The new vouch­ers are avail­able be­cause HUD and the VA an­nounced $35 mil­lion in grants to com­bat vet­eran home­less­ness na­tion­wide ear­lier this month.

The vouch­ers are meant to pro­vide per­ma­nent sup­port­ive hous­ing for more than 4,000 home­less veter­ans.
