Diehl for U.S. Senate

-

The people of Massachusetts deserve a senator who is fully dedicated to their interests for the duration of the six-year term. Neither political aspirations nor personal brand-building should take priority over the cause of the constituency.

Geoff Diehl has proved that the concerns of the residents of his district as well as the taxpayers throughout the state are paramount among his priorities. In 2013, lawmakers on Beacon Hill passed a gas tax that would be linked to inflation. The result would mean automatically increased taxes every year without the Legislature having to be held accountable or casting votes. State Rep. Diehl led the fight to repeal the tax by organizing an effort to move the issue to a ballot question.

The opposition was powerful and flush with resources, outspending Diehl’s group by $3 million. He mustered clipboard warriors and set out to “Tank the Gas Tax.” The gambit paid off, and in November 2014, ballot Question 1 was passed, repealing the automatic gas tax indexing.

In 2015, when the “Boston 2024” campaign to host the Olympics was gaining momentum, Diehl pushed back in the name of taxpayers. Diehl formed a bipartisan coalition with an unlikely ally, former gubernatorial candidate Evan Falchuk. Together they worked to introduce a ballot question to protect taxpayers from incurring the costs. The powerful opposition threw in the towel.

Contrast that consistent commitment to the people of Massachusetts to that of his rival, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and we come away with a very different reality.

Warren has been bolstering her presidential persona for years, and has ramped up the effort as we approach the 2020 presidential contest.

Just this year, she has denigrated our entire criminal justice system, called for the abolishment of ICE and demanded the ouster of the sitting president by invoking the 25th Amendment.

On the heels of her Native American DNA campaign (debacle), there can be no doubt that she is now devoted to running for president. Indeed, she said as much in early October, “It’s time for women to go to Washington and fix our broken government,” she declared. “And that includes a woman at the top. So here’s what I promise. After November the 6th, I will take a hard look at running for president.”

If Warren is re-elected, her term begins on hiatus for at least two years as she casts her responsibilities to the Bay State aside and criss-crosses the country railing against Donald Trump. Having learned the lessons from Hillary Clinton’s loss in 2016, her road trip would likely be more tireless than we have ever seen.

Faith that Diehl will be totally and exclusively committed to Massachusetts is not blind faith at all. He has earned the trust of voters because he has proved his devotion to them again and again, not because he is the golden child of the intellectual elite.

As the scope of Diehl’s responsibilities would widen dramatically as a senator, he is on the right side of important issues. He supports Israel, believes in the sanctity of the Second Amendment, wants to repeal Obamacare and offer more health care choices for families, and he has a comprehensive plan to improve health care for veterans.

He believes in border security, supports law enforcement and has proven himself willing to go to the mat for lower taxes. He will advocate for our fishermen and is aggressive in his approach to fighting the opioid epidemic.

Diehl holds the taxpayers of Massachusetts in the highest regard and has shown hardworking voters that he respects them.

We proudly endorse Geoff Diehl because he has earned the opportunity to prove himself in the U.S. Senate.
