Warren Layne, Tewksbury resident, police lieutenant, Air Force vet, at age 74

Warren R. Layne of Tewksbury died Oct. 26 at his home of Parkinson’s disease. He was 74. Mr. Layne was born at the Chelsea Navy Hospital. He lived a greater part of his life in Tewksbury. He was a 1961 graduate of Tewksbury Memorial High School. Mr. Layne served in the Air Force from 1962 to 1966 and was stationed in Alaska during the historic 9.2 earthquake and tsunami of 1964. He began his career as an auxiliary officer with the Tewksbury police in 1967 and was a 1968 graduate of the Bloomberg Police Training Academy. He became patrolman in 1970 and was promoted to sergeant and later lieutenant. Mr. Layne worked for the police force until retirement in 1999. He earned an associate’s degree from Northern Essex Community College and worked for Omnus Security in Bedford and Cambridge. He was a profession­al assistant at the Tewksbury Funeral Home for 20 years. Mr. Layne was a member of the Massachuse­tts Police Associatio­n, the Massachuse­tts State, County and Municipal Employees Associatio­n, St. William’s Men’s Club and the Father Coppen’s Council, Knights of Columbus in Tewksbury. He served as Town Meeting moderator for Tewksbury, as an election polling warden, a member of the Council on Aging, as a caller at Friday night bingo and was a communican­t of St. William’s Parish. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Lindalee T. (Symonds) (O’Connor); three sons, Kenneth W. of Dracut, Keith R. of Derry, N.H. and Frederick O’Connor of Groveland; a sister, Cheryl Accardi of Wells, Maine; a brother, Richard of Pepperell; five grandchild­ren and many nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass was celebrated yesterday. Burial was in Tewksbury Cemetery. Arrangemen­ts by Tewksbury Funeral Home.
