Leicester nets win in emotional return

The smiles returned briefly to the faces of Leicester’s players yesterday following the most traumatic week of their careers. In its first game since the death of club owner Vichai Srivaddhan­aprabha in a helicopter crash last weekend, Leicester won an emotional and highly charged English Premier League match at promoted Cardiff 1-0. “That was a tough game, not just on the pitch, but mentally,” goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel said. “I am proud of this team and the club, the way everyone has handled themselves has been unbelievab­le.” James Milner scored his 50th league goal as Liverpool drew at Arsenal 1-1 to move one point clear of secondplac­ed Manchester City. City plays today against Southampto­n at home. Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho called himself “the luckiest manager in the Premier League” after his seventh-place side came from behind to win at Bournemout­h 2-1. Mourinho called his team’s first-half display a “disaster.”

Peterman to start for Bills

Nathan Peterman will start at quarterbac­k for the Buffalo Bills today against the Chicago Bears after Derek Anderson was ruled out with a concussion . . . . The Bears placed right guard Kyle Long on injured reserve because of a tendon injury in his right foot . . . . Giants safety Sean Chandler was fined $20,054 for unnecessar­y roughness for a horse-collar tackle in the fourth quarter of their loss to Washington last Sunday. Accelerate takes Breeders’ Classic

Accelerate took the lead at the top of the stretch and held off Gunnevera to win the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic by a length in Louisville, Ky., strengthen­ing his bid for Horse of the Year honors over Triple Crown winner Justify. The race lacked the retired Justify and left a wideopen field, which the chestnut 5-year-old horse eventually overtook after breaking from the No. 14 post as the favorite. Accelerate made a sweeping move in the far turn and was in charge at the top of the stretch, then held off Gunnevera for his fifth consecutiv­e Grade 1 victory and sixth of seven overall this year. That gave trainer John Sadler his first Breeders’ Cup win since his first starter 30 years ago.

DeChambeau, Uihlein share lead

Bryson DeChambeau birdied four of the last six holes for a share of the lead with New Bedford’s Peter Uihlein in the Shriners Hospitals For Children Open in Las Vegas. DeChambeau shot a 6-under 66 to match Uihlein at 16-under 197 at TPC Summerlin. The leader after each of the first two rounds, Uihlein had a 68. He’s winless on the PGA Tour. Lucas Glover was a stroke back after a 61 . . . . Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer 7-6 (6), 5-7, 7-6 (3) in an epic Paris Masters semifinal lasting three hours, after Federer saved two match points . . . . Pitcher Jairo Capellan was killed and two other Cincinnati Reds minor leaguers were injured in a car accident yesterday morning in the Dominican Republic, a team official said.
