Penguins’ Murray off to IR

-

The Pittsburgh Penguins placed goaltender Matt Murray on injured reserve yesterday because of a lower-body injury. Coach Mike Sullivan said Murray had been dealing with the injury “for a couple weeks.” Team doctors decided rest was the best course of action for the 24-year-old Murray, who helped the Penguins to consecutive Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017 but has struggled this season. Murray is 4-5-1 with a 4.08 goals-against average and .877 save percentage in 11 games. He has spent most of the past six weeks splitting playing time with Casey DeSmith. Pittsburgh recalled Tristan Jarry from WilkesBarre/Scranton of the American Hockey League to serve as the primary backup behind DeSmith. The Penguins play the Bruins tonight at the Garden. Elsewhere in the NHL — The Edmonton Oilers acquired defenseman Chris Wideman from the Ottawa Senators for a 2020 sixth-round pick. Wideman has two goals, three assists and 12 penalty minutes in 19 games this season. The 28-year-old St. Louis native and former Miami (Ohio) star had 16 goals, 27 assists, 98 penalty minutes and a plus-7 rating in 175 games spanning four seasons with Ottawa. The pick was previously acquired by Edmonton from St. Louis for defenseman Jakub Jerabek on Oct. 1 . ... The Los Angeles Kings acquired forward Pavel Jenys from Minnesota in exchange for defenseman Stephan Falkovsky. Both players are currently in the ECHL . ... The Anaheim Ducks are playing without injured defensemen Hampus Lindholm and Cam Fowler, forcing them to use four rookie blueliners. Lindholm missed his second consecutive game in Wednesday’s 4-3 win against Vancouver because of a lower-body injury. Fowler is out indefinitely with broken bones in his face after getting hit by a puck.
