N.H. teen arrested for anti-gay threats
Made calls to 2 Boston bars
A 16-year-old accused of making threatening calls to two Boston gay bars is under arrest in New Hampshire, authorities said. The teen, who was not identified because he is a juvenile, allegedly called two gay bars about two weeks ago, including The Alley Bar, and made threats, authorities said. The juvenile, of Hampton, N.H., was arrested by Seabrook, N.H., police, the Boston Police Department said. He is charged with threats with serious public alarm and civil rights violations. Rocco LaMonica, a manager at The Alley Bar who was working when the threatening call came in, said yesterday he hopes they have an opportunity to meet with the juvenile and try to change his perspective. “Nobody wants to prosecute someone and ruin someone’s life,” LaMonica said. “Hopefully maybe this way, of talking to them, seeing we’re not the enemy, they’ll see it’s okay to be who you are.” The juvenile allegedly called dbar and The Alley Bar on consecutive nights, around the same time. LaMonica, who was work- ing when the call came in, said he was able to find the caller’s number, helping authorities track down the suspect. When the calls were first reported, authorities blasted the acts. “We don’t take any threats lightly,” police Commissioner William G. Gross told the Herald at the time. “Everybody should be able to enjoy any establishment that they wish to go into in the city of Boston. Whether it’s the Alley or the dbar, you should be able to enjoy yourself peacefully.” Gross could not be reached for comment yesterday.
