- By STEPHEN HEWITT

Boston College tried as hard as it could to fly to Texas on Friday night and yesterday morning, but the first game of its home-and-home series against Texas A&M was cancelled.

A combination of mechanical and logistical issues with its charter aircraft, plus weather that saw record rainfall and high winds in Texas, led to the cancellation of the Eagles’ game against the Aggies, which was scheduled to be played last night at 6 p.m. Eastern in College Station, Texas. BC attempted to reschedule the game, offering to play at 10 p.m. Eastern or any time today, but Texas A&M declined both offers. As a result, Texas A&M announced shortly before noon on Saturday that the game was cancelled. Texas A&M is scheduled to come to Chestnut Hill next season to complete the home-and-home, but there’s a high likelihood the entire series will be cancelled, according to a source. BC was originally scheduled to depart from Hanscom Field in Bedford at 2 p.m. Eastern on Friday, but the charter plane was grounded because of a mechanical issue that could not be repaired. An alternate plane was slated to arrive from Orlando, Fla., to transport the team at 3:30, but it arrived four hours late. At that point, the weather in College Station was awful, and the pilot deemed the conditions unsafe to fly. Northeastern 92, Oakland 83 — Donnell Gresham Jr. scored a career-high 26 points with seven rebounds, Anthony Green scored 16 and the Huskies (5-5) beat the Golden Grizzlies (4-6) at Matthews Arena. Jordan Roland scored 20 points for Northeastern, which made 32-of-53 shots from the floor (60 percent). Vermont 71, Harvard 65 — Anthony Lamb scored a career-high 37 points and rallied the Catamounts (7-3) late in the game for a victory against the Crimson (4-5) in Burlington, Vt. The Catamounts led by two with 4:47 left in the first half when Harvard’s Corey Johnson sank three 3-pointers and Spencer Freedman nailed a fourth to help push the Crimson into a 36-29 lead at the break. Johnson scored 17 points with five rebounds to lead Harvard. Rhode Island 79, Holy Cross 63— Cyril Langevine scored 19 points with 11 rebounds, Fatts Russell scored 19 and the Rams (4-3) routed the Crusaders (6-4) Worcester. Brown got into a groove late in the first half, making four straight 3s during the final 2:29 to give the Tigers a 51-32 lead. Seton Hall 84, Kentucky 83 — Myles Cale hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 9.5 seconds left in overtime and the Pirates (6-3) stunned the No. 9 Wildcats (7-2) in New York. Seton Hall overcame Keldon Johnson’s half-court heave that tied the score at the regulation buzzer. Johnson had a chance to win it for the Wildcats (7-2), but his 3-point try with a second remaining was blocked by Quincy McKnight. Michigan St. 63, Florida 59 — Kyle Aherns scored the team’s final seven points, including a two-handed jam with 8.7 seconds remaining, and the No. 10 Spartans (8-2 beat the Gators (5-4) in Gainesville, Fla.
