Slavitt wrong on free speech

Evan Slavitt’s slavish devotion to “free speech” over morality and decency illustrates precisely what is wrong with the legal profession. His excuses are illogical and pathetic. Michelle Carter is a vicious, deranged psychopath, who most assuredly deserves a lot worse than the sentence she received for instigating this young man’s death. His comparison to yelling at someone in a a parking lot is about as relevant as a Nazi war criminal bleating that he was only following orders. The “free speech” defense for Carter is a lawyer’s typical attempt to get the perp off at any cost, akin to attacking a rape victim on the witness stand for wearing attractive clothing. Our justice system needs to be about justice, not a contest between defense lawyers and prosecutors at the expense of the victims.
