Virginia holds off Irish

Kyle Guy scored 22 points, De’Andre Hunter had 20 with 10 rebounds and No. 4 Virginia withstood a late push by Notre Dame to win, 60-54, yesterday in Charlottes­ville, Va.

Hunter scored six points during a 9-0 run for the Cavaliers (22-2, 10-2 ACC) after the Fighting Irish closed to within 45-44 with 8:12 left.

T.J. Gibbs scored 17 and D.J. Harvey had 10 for Notre Dame (13-12, 3-9).

Notre Dame got within 5452 in the final minute after Virginia went scoreless for more than four minutes. But Guy made four free throws to seal it.

Kentucky 86, Tennessee 69 — In Lexington, Ky., PJ Washington scored 23 points, Keldon Johnson added 19 and the No. 5 Wildcagts (21-4, 10-2 SEC) upset the No. 1 Volunteers (23-2, 11-1), ending their 19-game winning streak.

The Wildcats used a 25-7 surge in seven minutes for a 62-38 lead, providing a cushion that withstood the Volunteers’ 13-0 spurt.

Duke 94, N.C. State 78 — RJ Barrett had the program’s first triple-double in 13 years, finishing with 23 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists as the second-ranked Blue Devils (23-2, 11-1 ACC) crushed the Wolfpack (18-8, 6-7) in Durham, N.C.

Zion Williamson scored 32 points on 12-of-16 shooting and Tre Jones added 13 to help the Blue Devils win their ninth straight.

Michigan 65, Maryland 52 — Charles Matthews scored 14 points and Iggy Brazdeikis added 13 to lift the No. 6 Wolverines (23-3, 12-3 Big Ten) past the No. 24 Terrapins (19-7, 10-5) in Ann Arbor, Mich.over Maryland.

Michigan rebounded from a loss at Penn State earlier in the week.

North Carolina 95, Wake Forest 57 — Cameron Johnson scored 27 points, and the No. 8 Tar Heels (20-5, 10-2) ACC) scored the game’s first 18 points en route to their biggest-ever margin of victory in an ACC road game, crushing the Demon Deacons (9-15, 2-10) in WinstonSal­em, N.C.

Purdue 76, Penn State 64 — Carsen Edwards scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half and Matt Haarms added a career-high 18 points as the No. 12 Boilermake­rs (18-7, 11-3 Big Ten) beat the Nittany Lions (9-16, 2-12) in West Lafayette, Ind.

The Boilermake­rs reclaimed a share of the conference lead with their ninth win in 10 games.

Kansas 78, West Virginia 53 — Devon Dotson and K.J. Lawson each scored 15 points, and the No. 14 Jayhawks (20-6, 9-4 Big 12) beat the depleted Mountainee­rs (10-15, 2-10) in Lawrence, Kan.

West Virginia, which struggled without former starters Esa Ahmed and Wesley Harris, who were dismissed from the team earlier in the week.

Texas Tech 86, Baylor 61 — Jarrett Culver scored 18 points and Davide Moretti added 17 as the No. 15 Red Raiders (21-6, 9-4 Big 12) beat the shorthande­d and turnover-prone Bears (16-9, 7-5) in Lubbock, Texas.

Jared Butler scored 16 points and Mario Kegler added 15 for the Bears, who were without key backcourt players Makai Mason (foot) and King McClure (knee) for the third consecutiv­e game.

Texas Tech stayed in second place in the conference by using an uncharacte­ristic hot hand from 3-point range to surge into a first-half lead that was never threatened.

Louisville 56, Clemson 55 — Christen Cunningham scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half to rally the No. 16 Cardinals (18-8, 9-4 ACC), who hung on in the final seconds to beat the Tigers (15-10, 5-7) in Louisville, Ky.

Florida State 69, Georgia Tech 47 — Christ Koumadje had 10 points and 12 rebounds as the No. 17 Seminoles (20-5, 8-4) tied a school record with their seventh straight ACC win, beating the Yellow Jackets (11-15, 3-10) in Atlanta.

Iowa State 78, Kansas State 64 — In Manhattan, Kan., Lindell Wigginton hit five 3-pointers and scored 23 points, Talen Horton-Tucker buried six 3s and had 20, and the No. 23 Cyclones (19-6, 8-4 Big 12) pulled away late to beat the No. 18 Wildcats (19-6, 9-3) and tighten up the Big 12 title race.

In New England games: Charleston 88, Northeaste­rn 79 — Grant Riller scored ten of his 33 points in overtime as the Cougars (21-7, 10-5 Colonial) rallied to beat the Huskies (16-10, 10-4) in Charleston, S.C.

Vasa Pusica had 25 points for the Huskies.

Harvard 75, Penn 68 — Bryce Aiken had 25 points and coach Tommy Amaker earned his 400th career victory as the Crimson (13-8, 6-2 Ivy) defeated the Quakers (15-9, 3-5) in Philadelph­ia.

Xavier 75, Providence 61 — Tyrique Jones had 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Musketeers (13-13, 5-8 Big East) past the Friars (14-12, 4-9) in Providence.

Holy Cross 72, Bucknell 71 — Jehyve Floyd had 19 points and eight rebounds, Jacob Grandison added 17 and Matt Faw hit a 3-pointer with 6.3 seconds left as the Crusaders (14-13, 5-9 Patriot) upset the Bison (17-9, 11-3) in Worcester.

UMBC 70, UMass Lowell 66 — In Baltimore, KJ Jackson posted 17 points and six rebounds and the Retrievers (17-10, 9-3 America East) beat the River Hawks (14-13, 6-6), who were led by Christian Lutete’s 17 points.

Men’s hockey

UMass 4, Boston College 2 — John Leonard and Oliver Chau scored power-play goals in a span of 1:08 in the second period and the No. 3 Minutemen (23-6-0, 15-4-0 Hockey East) beat the Eagles (10-16-3, 9-7-3) at Kelley Rink.
