Foodie guide to Stowe

All trails lead to treats at Lodge

- By J. Q. LOUISE

Stowe, Vt., is one of the most popular ski destinations on the East Coast, and the on-mountain resort, the Lodge at Spruce Peak, is the place to be this time of year — especially if you are a foodie!

Last year, Vail Resorts purchased the ski mountain of Stowe, but the hotel and resort remained separate, so what was formerly known as the Stowe Mountain Lodge is now the Lodge at Spruce Peak.

Regardless of what the ski conditions look like, the culinary scene is always great. There are several onpremise dining options available throughout your stay. Each morning, you and the kids can hit the buffet at Solstice for a full breakfast, complete with custom-made omelets, or you can just grab a gourmet latte at the Beanery and hit the slopes.

For lunch, you’ll want to head to the lobby for the sushi and raw bar. A fresh take on “ski food,” the sushi concept is a tasty way to refuel for a few more hours of skiing.

Every Saturday at 3:30 p.m., there is a complimentary toast and snack at the brand-new WhistlePig Pavilion, a chalet-style structure in the middle of the resort. At the Pavilion, right next to the ice rink, guests can enjoy things like hot raclette, melted in the fireplace and served with traditional accoutrements, as well as fun twists like cheesy pretzels and more — along with plenty of hot and cold adult beverages. The must-try cocktail is the Hot Buttered Pig, bartender Dan Hatheway’s take on a cross between a hot toddy and a mulled cider. And for the kids, head back to the lobby for a special hot chocolate bar, filled with lots of amazing toppings to really bling out your cocoa.

For dinner, the main attraction is the chef ’s table at Solstice. Only one seating per night, the chef’s table guests will be treated to a special five-course menu, with wine parings if desired. The menu is truly farm-to-table. After dinner, ask around to find out where the secret on-mountain speakeasy is. Named the “Linehouse,” this underground hot spot is inviteonly, but if you are lucky enough to find it, you’ll be able to indulge in a few more belly-warming creations from the amazing mixology team at Spruce Peak.
