Yanks reclaim first in AL East

Brett Gardner homered early, then had two hits during a seven-run burst in the sixth inning fueled by five walks that sent the Yankees past the Tampa Bay Rays, 13-5, yesterday in New York.

The Yankees took their second straight weekend series with Tampa Bay and moved a half-game in front atop the AL East.

Aaron Hicks homered for the first time since returning from injury and DJ LeMahieu also connected to help the Yankees win for the 10th time in 13 games.

Kevin Kiermaier and Willy Adames homered on consecutiv­e pitches in the second to give the Rays a 2-1 lead. Brandon Lowe hit a three-run homer in the third, his third of the series, to make it 5-3.

Adam Ottavino (2-1) struck out Austin Meadows with the bases loaded to end the sixth and keep the score tied at 5. Chance Adams pitched three innings for his first save.

Blue Jays 5, White Sox 2 — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit another home run, Danny Jansen and Billy McKinney also connected and Toronto won in Chicago.

Guerrero has hit all four of his home runs in the past six games.

Mariners 7, Twins 4 — Edwin Encarnacio­n made several nice plays at first base early in the game, then hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning as host Seattle snapped Minnesota’s five-game winning streak.

Indians, 10, Orioles 0 — Shane Bieber (3-2) struck out a career-high 15 in his first major league complete game and host Cleveland routed Baltimore.

Athletics 5, Tigers 3, susp. — Oakland led host Detroit in the bottom of the seventh inning when the game was suspended because of rain. The game will resume Sept. 6 before the Tigers play a series in Oakland.

Royals 5, Angels 1 — Danny Duffy (3-1) won his third straight start, allowing five hits in six effectice innings as Kansas City beat Los Angeles in Anaheim.

National League

Brewers 3, Braves 2 — Ben Gamel led off the 10th with a home run against Wes Parsons, lifting host Milwaukee past Atlanta.

All five runs in the game came on homers, including one by Christian Yelich.

Phillies 7, Rockies 5 — Bryce Harper homered for the second straight day and pinch-hitter J.T. Realmuto also went deep to help host Philadelph­ia complete a sweep of Colorado.

Cubs 6, Nationals 5 — Anthony Rizzo homered, Albert Almora Jr. had three hits and Chicago held off host Washington.

Chicago led 6-1 before Washington closed to 6-5 on homers by Anthony Rendon and Howie Kendrick.

Dodgers 8, Reds 3 — HyunJin Ryu threw seven shutout innings to extend his major league-leading streak to 31, Cody Bellinger hit his 17th homer and Los Angeles won in Cincinnati.

Marlins 3, Mets 0 — Sandy Alcantara (2-4) threw a two-hitter in a pitching duel with Noah Syndergaar­d (3-4), and host Miami beat New York to complete a three-game sweep.

Pirates 6, Padres 4 — Colin Moran hit a three-run home run and finished with four RBI, and Joe Musgrove (3-4) beat his hometown team for the second time in as many seasons as Pittsburgh took 3-of-4 from host San Diego.

Giants 3, Diamondbac­ks 2 — Pablo Sandoval opened the 10th inning with a pinch-hit homer after shortstop Brandon Crawford made a game-saving stop in the ninth, helping San Francisco sneak past Arizona in Phoenix.

Interleagu­e

Rangers 5, Cardinals 4 — Nomar Mazara hit a sacrifice fly off reliever Carlos Martinez to cap a two-run rally in the 10th inning, lifting host Texas to a win against St. Louis.
