Trump went too far – and helped unify divided Dems
President Trump whacked the beehive Sunday, setting off an unnecessary controversy that understandably got Democrats upset.
In a poorly worded tweet storm directed at freshman Democrat congresswomen who trash talk him and America regularly, the president went off: “So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how….it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!”
First off, there are a few problems with his tweet, starting with the fact that three of the four congresswomen he’s referring to were born in the United States — so they’re not going anywhere.
As for Rep. Ilhan Omar, she was born in Somalia — an impoverished, war-torn country where women are subjected to horrific oppression including female genital mutilation, being sold off against their will as child brides and other forms of subjugation so bad that Omar herself fled the country.
Where to? The United States. So with Omar, the president is making a broader point that the former refugee, now a U.S. congresswoman representing Minnesota’s 5th District, should appreciate the unparalleled freedom and opportunities America affords to all women, including herself, instead of lambasting the red, white and blue on a never-ending loop.
Notwithstanding, Trump shouldn’t have tweeted that inartful missive, because instead of letting the Democratic Party continue its infighting — especially between Ocasio-Cortez and Speaker Nancy Pelosi that’s been destabilizing the DNC — he succeeded in unifying Democrats against him again.
The president also subjected himself to renewed accusations of xenophobia, white nationalism and other character assassinations that could’ve been avoided should he just let Dems go at it among themselves — without inserting himself in their intraparty battles.
Donald Trump never apologizes, never explains. Maybe this time, he should think about it.
That said, with over 160 million social media followers across platforms, Trump can easily change the subject.
The sooner the better.
