Callahan joins Herald Patriots beat
Two in new roles covering Sox
The Boston Herald is pleased to announce an exciting new hire and a pair of internal promotions this week.
Award-winning journalist Andrew Callahan, a veteran on the Patriots beat, has been named to lead the Herald’s Patriots beat, while Jason Mastrodonato and Steve Hewitt will team up to lead coverage of the Red Sox.
Callahan will join Karen Guregian on the Patriots beat full time.
“We are thrilled to have Andrew coming on board,” Herald sports editor Justin Pelletier said. “He is a rising star, and his writing will be must-read for the legions of people who clamor every day for the latest news about the team and its personalities.”
Callahan began his career covering UConn football for SB Nation. He moved on to the Darien News and New Canaan News in Connecticut in 2014, covered Penn State football for the Lebanon Daily News in Pennsylvania through 2016 and for CBS Sports through 2018 before landing back in New England at MassLive in 2018.
“Since I was a kid, one of my favorite places in the world has been the back pages of the Boston Herald,” Callahan said. “To be there every day as the paper’s newest Patriots beat reporter is a true honor and joy. Together with Karen Guregian and the editorial staff, I will strive every day to uphold the Herald’s longstanding tradition of journalistic excellence.
“New England fans deserve fresh insight into the greatest dynasty in NFL history because connections to pro sports run deeper here than anywhere else in the country. And so will the coverage.”
Mastrodonato, who has covered the Red Sox since 2011 and has written for the Herald since 2013, will be the organization’s beat columnist.
“Jason has a good voice and great knowledge, and he has demonstrated over the years a penchant for solid storytelling,” Pelletier said. “His work in this new role will be great for readers.”
“I’m honored to approach my second decade of Red Sox coverage in an expanded role as a columnist while the diligent Steve Hewitt takes over the beat,” Mastrodonato said. “Equally as exciting is a return to my roots as a feature writer in the offseason, when I’ll share the most gripping stories from the best sports region in the country.”
Hewitt, who has written for the Herald in a variety of capacities, will take over the Red Sox beat full time.
“Steve has demonstrated an ability to cover a wide array of sports and has handled multiple large assignments well,” Pelletier added. “We have no doubt he will apply those skills in his dogged pursuit of the latest news from a very important local beat.”
“This is a dream come true,” Hewitt said. “I’m honored to take on this role, and I can’t wait to get to work with Jason Mastrodonato as we strive to continue the paper’s long tradition of excellent Sox coverage.”
