Sweater weather
Cooler temps call for chic, timeless styles
You know how early fall in New England is: One minute you’re sweating on an 85-degree day, and the next you wake up and it’s undeniably chilly. And the best antidote to that is a cozy sweater — the kind that hugs you like a comforting blanket and makes the chilly days something to enjoy.
Thankfully, this fall’s women’s lines happen to be chock-full of such beauties, and in all kinds of shapes— turtlenecks, v-necks and cardigans galore. Here are a bunch worth checking out and snapping up before they’re gone.
Big, cozy turtlenecks: Season after season, Garnet Hill consistently has some of the prettiest designs that are simple in an everyday-wearable way. Its Oversized Turtleneck Sweater ($169 on garnethill.com) is truly like wearing a blanket—in jewel tones like deep mahogany, it has a swing coat-like shape but fitted sleeves so you can still get things done. Less pricey is the Longline Turtleneck Sweater ($39 on nordstrom.com) that’s boxy enough to be perfect over a pencil pant.
Prints: From animal patterns to yummy stripes, there’s no need to stick to solid-color sweaters this season. I love Ulla Johnson’s Electra Pullover Rose ($525 on grettaluxe.com) so much, I sell it in my store. And the grandpa cardi is also back — this time in leopard print. The LongSleeve V-Neck Cardigan by Universal Thread ($29.99 on target.com) is a steal that will jazz up just about any fall look.
Chunky knit cardigans: I adore oversized cardis that are so big they almost function as a coat. That’s the case with Calvin Klein’s Oversized Chunky Knit Cardigan ($79.50 on lordandtaylor.com) — it works as well over an L.B.D. as it does with a tweed pencil skirt or casual cropped pants. You’ll get a mix of workplace chic and mod menswear in the Edith Houndstooth Cardigan ($140 on anthropologie.com).
V-necks: The classic preppy staple is in big play this season, and makes a fine showing with the Devon Jacquard Sweater by Nanushka ($360 on nordstrom.com) — in a berry cream, it’s both a swirling statement piece and an easy throw-on. And how cute is the Colorblocked Argyle Sweater by Tommy Hilfiger (now on sale for $36.39 on macys.com)? It seems tailor-made for that time-honored fall tradition — layering.
