Feehan wins South title

- By BOSTON HERALD STAFF Greg Dudek, Tom Fargo, Brendan Connelly, Kat Hasenauer Cornetta, Marcello Rossetti, and Stephen Tobey contributed to this report.

Bishop Feehan’s state tournament runs each of the last two years barely got off the ground as the Shamrocks suffered a pair of first-round exits.

But with sensational junior striker Francesca Yanchuk leading the way, the experience this postseason was much different.

Behind two second-half goals from Yanchuk, the second-seeded Shamrocks (210-1) captured the program’s first Div. 1 South title Saturday by edging No. 1 King Philip, 2-1.

Brookline 2, Andover 0 —

After a disappointing loss in the state semifinals last year, Brookline’s mission this year was clear: reach the state finals and win. Step one of that mission is complete as the No. 3 Warriors (15-1-5) shut out No. 4 Andover to repeat as Div. 1 North champions.

Eleanor Fisher dominated play, opening the scoring five minutes into the second half and assisting on the second to Samantha Friedman.

Dover Sherborn 4, East Bridgewater 0 — After pulsepounding wins in penalty kicks and double overtime in its first two tournament games, the Dover-Sherborn girls soccer team allowed itself some stress-free moments in the second half of the Div. 3 South final.

The No. 2 Raiders scored three times after the break to pull away from No. 6 East Bridgewater for its first sectional title since 2011.

Stoneham 2, Wayland 0 —

Stoneham girls soccer is well known for their twin senior powerhouses, the Caldarelli twins. But to win their first Div. 3 North sectional title, the Spartans started five freshmen and saw them step up on their biggest stage yet.

Freshman Courtney Ponzo scored the game-winner to lead No. 1 Stoneham (19-3) past No. 11 Wayland (12-4-3).

Millis 2, Hull 1 — Junior Courtney Bickford buried the game-clinching goal off a rebound in the 75th minute, as No. 5 Millis topped No. 3 Hull for its third straight Div. 4 South title.

Boys soccer

Needham 5, Brockton 2 —

After a stagnant 40 minutes, top-seeded Needham still had confidence that its prolific offense would take shape in the second half.

It certainly did with the Rockets scoring five secondhalf goals, three of which came from Matthew Dougherty as the Rockets (16-3-3) took down No. 3 Brockton to claim the Div. 1 South title.

Medway 1, Norton 0 — Medway senior captain Kyle Regan stopped all three shots he faced in penalty kicks, setting up junior Danny MacDonald to put away the game-winner in a 3-0 shootout victory that delivered Medway its second sectional crown in the last four years.

Bedford 3, Lynnfield 1 —

Going into the Div. 3 North final, Bedford had only allowed four goals all season. A strong defense served the Bucs well all season, and did so once again defeating the Pioneers, who were playing in the sectional title for a second straight year.

Cohasset 4, Atlantis Charter 1— Kyle Osborne recorded a hat trick to power the secondseeded Skippers to a fourth straight Div. 2 South boys soccer title with a 4-1 victory over upstart Atlantis Charter.

It didn’t take very long for Osborne to leave his imprint on this one — about five minutes. Osborne drew a tripping call in the box, and fired a rocket on the penalty kick to begin the fireworks.

Lincoln-Sudbury 2, Medford 1— On Thursday, the LincolnSudbury boys soccer team was named the MIAA Division 1 North champion. On Saturday, the Warriors won it on the field, defeating Medford, 2-1 at Manning Field.

Medford (16-2-1) played in the final after receiving an injunction in court on Friday overturning its forfeit for using an ineligible player.
