Tournament proposal sent to assembly
The MIAA Statewide Tournament proposal is headed for a special assembly.
On Wednesday afternoon, the MIAA Board of Directors voted on a motion 14-3 to hold a special assembly to determine whether or not the MIAA Statewide Tournament proposal should go into effect beginning in the fall of 2021. The special assembly will convene on February 28th at 9 a.m. at a location to be determined.
The MIAA’s Tournament Management Committee
recently unanimously passed a motion that asked the board to approve the creation of a special assembly. Then, on Wednesday, three members of the TMC — Burlington athletic director Shaun Hart, Westborough athletic director Johanna DiCarlo, and chair Jim O’Leary — came before the Board of Directors to make their case for one.
Now all eyes will turn to whether a majority of the 380 MIAA member schools will vote to approve the statewide tournament proposal and, in doing so, overhaul the MIAA postseason formats. Each member school will receive one vote, with either the school’s athletic director or principal able to cast the vote. Attendance at the special assembly will be taken upon arrival by each member school, and as each school casts their vote. The vote itself, however, will remain anonymous.
“At this point now, its just about whether you agree with it or not,” DiCarlo said. “I think there is enough information out there now to make an informed decision and its just about whether you agree with it or not.”
