Liz lashed for ‘broke college student’ claim

Elizabeth Warren, trying to tout her grassroots support in the face of her losses in New Hampshire and Iowa, bragged that even a broke college student gave her $3 of her last $6 — a claim that drew scathing derision on Twitter.

The Massachusetts U.S. senator spoke to MSNBC as her watch party wound down in Manchester, N.H.

“There are so many people who are in this fight for all the right reasons,” Warren said, launching into a story about a woman who had come up to her during her post-speech “selfie line.”

“A young woman came up by herself and she said, ‘I’m a broke college student with a lot of student loan debt,’ and she said, ‘I checked and I have $6 dollars in the bank, so I just gave $3 to keep you in this fight,” said Warren, who tweeted out the clip.

Twitter lit up with cutting criticism for Warren, Townhall.com noted. She is reportedly worth about $12 million.

@derekahunter tweeted, “You’re a millionaire, why the hell are you taking $3 from someone who only has $6? What kind of monster are you?”

@bethanyshondark took aim at the college student: “That poor decision making may have something to do with why you have six dollars.”

@lilBwady wrote, “You took $3 from a broke student. Nice. That $3 isn’t going to make or break you. It will however cause the student not to eat one day. I would have given her the money back and not tweeted about this. But that’s none of my business. This reads like a losing tweet.”

“Give her a refund she needs to buy lunch,” wrote @jacobisanadult.
