$100G bail set for Dot man accused of trying to stab cop

- By STEFAN GELLER

The man who was shot in the leg by Boston Police on Monday night after he allegedly stabbed another man and then tried to do the same to a cop who intervened was ordered held on $100,000 cash bail on Wednesday.

With his bandaged foot hanging off the side of his hospital bed at Boston Medical Center, 32-year-old Luis Gomes of Dorchester was sullen and silent as Judge Jonathan Tynes reviewed the charges against him, including armed assault with intent to murder and assault by means of a dangerous weapon.

Boston Police officers were on patrol at about 11:30 p.m. in Dorchester when they witnessed Gomes stab another man multiple times, police Commissioner William Gross said.

“(He) was wielding a knife and actively stabbing the victim,” Gross said, adding that the alleged victim suffered wounds to both his head and neck. “It was a very violent attack.”

When one of the officers tried to separate the two, Gomes turned and tried to stab him, too, the commissioner said. Fearing for the lives of both his partner and the victim, the other officer shot Gomes in the thigh, Gross said.

The officers then applied a tourniquet to his leg, and Boston EMS rushed him and the stabbing victim to nearby hospitals, the commissioner said. The officers were not injured, and the alleged victim is reportedly in stable condition.

Assistant District Attorney Brian Spring did not say what the motive behind the initial attack was but implied that Gomes did not know the alleged victim, as one of the conditions set by the commonwealth was that Gomes not have any contact with the victim, “should his identity become known to him.”

A not guilty plea was entered on Gomes’ behalf and he is scheduled to appear in Dorchester District Court on March 12 for a probable cause hearing. The prosecutor said Gomes could face up to 20 years in state prison.

In addition to the $100,000 bail and the order for no contact with the victim, Gomes was ordered to not return to Fields Corner. He is being defended by attorney Rose King.

Following the incident, Gross said that Mayor Martin Walsh and Suffolk District Attorney Rachael Rollins were notified of the attack and that police were canvassing the neighborhood for surveillance footage.

“If anyone saw anything, please help us facilitate this investigation,” Gross said. “Any and all reports will be accepted and welcome.”
