Ipswich injuries lifethreatening
Three bicyclists are fighting for their lives after being struck by a car in a “very serious” crash in Ipswich on Thursday, police said.
Police responded to Topsfield Road near Turner Hill at 2:11 p.m. where they found a 58-year-old man, a 60-year-old woman and a 19year-old man who had been struck by a Kia Soul, Police Chief Paul A. Nikas said in a statement.
Multiple medical helicopters were called due to the severity of the cyclists’ injures, according to police.
The 58-year-old man and 19-year-old man were taken by ambulance to the Turner Hill Golf Club then flown by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston with life-threatening injuries, police said.
The 60-year-old woman was taken by ambulance to Beverly Hospital with serious injuries that are now believed to be life-threatening, police said.
There was a heavy police presence and the twisted frame of a bicycle could still be seen laying in the street at a bend in the road near 197 Topsfield Road about an hour after the crash.
Police closed Topsfield Road to traffic for several hours on Thursday as they investigated the incident.
The road has since reopened.
A 43-year-old Ipswich woman who was driving the car was also taken to a local hospital with injuries not believed to be serious, police said.
The woman stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, authorities said. No charges had been filed as of 6 p.m. on Thursday. Ipswich Police said the crash remains under “active” investigation by local and state authorities. The Essex County District Attorney’s Office has also been made aware of the investigation.
