Norwell stays unbeaten, tops Cohasset in boys soccer

NORWELL — No matter the circumstance, even playing amid a worldwide pandemic, the intensity doesn’t diminish when Norwell faces archrival Cohasset.

And with the Skippers visiting the Clippers Thursday, Norwell passed its stiffest challenge in the South Shore League in convincing fashion by taking down Cohasset, 4-1.

“We do miss the state tournament, so this was a big game. Probably the biggest game of the season,” said Norwell coach Jack Browne. “The kids were excited to play. They’re always excited to play Cohasset.”

Norwell, which improved to 6-0 and has won every one of its league games since a tie with Cohasset (5-1) three years ago, struck first in the third minute when Mischa Spasic drilled a shot into the back of the net.

But just 1:12 later, Cohasset responded with Lucas Federle netting a goal off an assist from Whit Swartwood to level the score, 1-1.

Norwell remained unfazed by the quick change in momentum and regained control with its precise passing and extra effort. Jack Demong put the Clippers back in front in the 23rd minute when he won a loose ball inside the box before depositing his bid top shelf.

Norwell then beat the first-half whistle by mere seconds to take a 3-1 lead into the break as Ben Pesko put home a terrific cross from Evan Thompson.

“A couple of our goals were just hard-nosed,” Browne said. “Refusing to not get (beat) to the ball. Being relentless in that area, which is something we preach a lot.”

Demong extended the lead once more when he deftly controlled a pass from Charles Pesko and slid his shot past a charging keeper.

And with Norwell’s defense locking down Cohasset, the Clippers had plenty to enjoy from another stellar all-around performance.

“We knew they were a good team and we came out with our best,” Demong said. “We knew we had to bring it and we brought it.”
