Iowa avenges loss to Gophers

Luka Garza scored 33 points and Joe Wieskamp added 20 as No. 5 Iowa beat No. 16 Minnesota 86-71 on Sunday.

Jordan Bohannon had 19 points and a career-high 14 assists for the Hawkeyes (11-2, 5-1 Big Ten), who avenged their overtime loss to the Golden Gophers on Christmas. Bohannon did not have a turnover in 36 minutes.

Iowa, which led 39-37 at halftime, opened the second half with a 22-6 run. Garza had 10 of his points in that stretch.

Minnesota (10-4, 3-4) rallied from a 63-45 deficit to get to within five points twice late in the second half. The Gophers defeated Iowa 102-95 in overtime on Dec. 25 by coming back from seven points down with 44 seconds left.

Maryland 66, No. 12 Illinois 63 — Darryl Morsell scored 19 points, Donta Scott added 16 and Maryland upset No. 12 Illinois 66-63 on Sunday.

The game was fast-paced and close throughout. Hakim Hart hit a 3-pointer with 4:08 left to give the Terrapins a 62-61 lead, which Maryland didn’t relinquish.

Ayo Dosunmu scored 23 points for Illinois (9-4, 5-2 Big Ten) and Kofi Cockburn added 21 points and 10 rebounds. Dosunmu missed a long 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have tied it.

Aaron Wiggins added 12 points for Maryland (7-6, 2-5). The Terrapins limped in on a three-game Big Ten losing streak, including two doubledigi­t home losses.

No. 19 Virginia Tech 77, Notre Dame 63— Jalen Cone scored 18 points off the bench to lift Virginia Tech over Notre Dame.

Cone connected on 5 of 11 from the floor, including four 3-pointers, as the Hokies (9-2, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) bounced back from Wednesday’s loss at Louisville. Virginia Tech has won five of six games and five consecutiv­e home games.

Keve Aluma added 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Hunter Cattoor had 15 points for the Hokies, who held Notre Dame to just two field goals in the second half.

Nate Laszewski led the Fighting Irish (3-7, 0-4) with 17 points.

Colgate 89, BU 45 — Jordan Burns posted 17 points, six rebounds and six assists as Colgate romped past Boston University.

Jack Ferguson had 14 points for Colgate (3-1, 3-1 Patriot League). Sam Thomson added seven rebounds.

Sukhmail Mathon had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Terriers (1-3, 1-3). Walter Whyte added 10 points.

Hartford 75, UMass-Lowell 58 —

Austin Williams had a career-high 29 points as Hartford topped UMass-Lowell.

Hunter Marks had 13 points and eight rebounds for Hartford (8-5, 5-3 America East Conference).

Traci Carter added 13 points and seven assists. D.J. Mitchell had 10 points.

Hartford totaled 44 second-half points, a season high for the team.

Obadiah Noel had 18 points for the River Hawks (4-8, 3-5). Kalil Thomas added a career-high 13 points. Salif Boudie had eight rebounds.

Holy Cross 70, Army 61 — Austin Butler posted his seventh career double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds to lead Holy Cross to a win over Army.

Matt Faw had 15 points five rebounds and tied his career high with four steals for Holy Cross (2-2, 2-2 Patriot League). Gerrale Gates added 12 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Ryan Wade had 11 points.

Butler’s 14 rebounds are most by a Crusader in a game this season.

Butler knocked down a 3-pointer to break a 53-53 tie and spark a 12-4 run for Holy Cross, which never trailed again. The Crusaders were 11 of 24 from 3-point range.

Xavier 74, Providence 73 — Colby Jones hit a 3-pointer with one tenth of a second left to lead Xavier to a win over Providence.

Xavier, which got the ball with 14.5 seconds to play, kept weaving toward the basket until Adam Kunkel drove into the late, kicked the ball to the right corner for Paul Scruggs, who whipped the ball up top to Jones. Jones hit nothing but net over the outstretch­ed arms of closing Jimmy Nichols Jr.

The basket capped an eight-point flurry for the Musketeers in the final minute to erase a 73-66 deficit, which was built by the Friars’ 11-0 run over the previous two minutes.

A Nate Watson layup with 3:02 to play started the Providence run and followed in quick succession with 3-pointers from AJ Reveves, David Duke and Noah Horschler as the Musketeers came up empty.

Then Nate Johnson hit a 3-pointer with a minute to play, the Friars were called for traveling and Zach Freemantle knocked down a jumper in the lane and following another giveaway Jones nailed the winner.

Freemantle had 17 points and eight rebounds to lead the Musketeers (10-2, 3-2 Big East Conference).

Duke scored a season-high 30 points and had six assists for the Friars (7-5, 3-3). Watson added 17 points and 14 rebounds. Jimmy Nichols Jr. had five assists.

In the final 12 minutes Providence made 12 of 14 shots, five of them triples, and in the last seven Xavier went 9 of 14 with three 3s.

UMBC 68, New Hampshire 66 — R.J. Eytle-Rock had a season-high 27 points, inlcuding the winning basket with less than a minute to play, as UMBC narrowly beat New Hampshire.

Eytle-Rock drove from the right side into the lane for a floater with 58.4 seconds left to make it 68-66. The Wildcats missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and UMBC missed a shot with 11 seconds left before New Hampshire’s Blondeau Tschoukuie­ngo missed a contested shot at the buzzer.

Keondre Kennedy had 13 points for UMBC (9-2, 5-1 America East Conference), which earned its sixth consecutiv­e road victory.

Nick Guadarrama scored a careerhigh 34 points for the Wildcats (4-5, 3-3). Jayden Martinez added 11 points and seven rebounds. Tayler Mattos had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Maine 45, NJIT 41 — Stephane Ingo had 10 points and 12 rebounds to lead Maine to a win over NJIT.

LeChaun DuHart had 15 points for Maine (2-5, 2-4 America East Conference), which broke its four-game road losing streak. Taylor Schildroth added seven rebounds. Ingo had six blocks, the most for a Black Bear in a game since 2011 and marked the 18th straight game with a block.

Vermont 84, Binghamton 44 — Tomas Murphy came off the bench to tally 13 points to lift Vermont past Binghamton.

Isaiah Powell had 12 points for Vermont (5-3, 5-3 America East Conference). Ryan Davis added eight rebounds. Bailey Patella had six assists. All 13 Catamounts scored.

Vermont dominated the first half and led 43-22 at the break. The Bearcats’ 22 first-half points marked a season low for the team., which has lost 13 straight in the series.

Siena 75, Fairfield 68 — Aidan Carpenter scored 19 points as Siena beat Fairfield.

Jordan King added 18 points for the Saints (4-0, 4-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference), while Manny Camper chipped in 17. Camper also had 12 rebounds and six assists.

Jake Wojcik had 18 points for the Stags (2-11, 2-6).
