Arctic blast on the way

It won’t feel like March

- by RICK SOBEY

A quick arctic blast will make it feel like the middle of winter as March kicks off this week.

Some parts of Massachusetts could plunge into the -15 degree wind-chill range on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

“We’re going to see a quick shot of arctic cold air, which will drive down the mild temperatures we’ve been experiencing,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Torry Gaucher, who’s based in NWS Boston’s Norton office.

“It’s definitely going to feel like the dead of winter again for early Tuesday into Tuesday afternoon,” he added.

Temperature lows are expected to be around zero in the Berkshires and teens on the Cape. Adding in gusty winds, it could feel like -15 in parts of western Massachusetts and in the single digits in the eastern part of the Bay State.

“The good news is we won’t be dealing with these frigid temperatures for very long,” Gaucher said.

The arctic blast will only be around for Tuesday.

NWS Boston tweeted, “You might have heard that it’s going to get chilly this week. Good news, it’s only for one day! The bad news, we won’t make it above freezing on Tuesday.”

It will be a bit of a rollercoaster temperature-wise into next weekend.

After Tuesday’s arctic air, above normal temperatures will quickly return for Wednesday and Thursday in the 40s. Then cooler air in the low 30s is expected for Friday.

“It won’t be as cold as Tuesday, but still chilly for the start of March and cool for the first weekend of March,” Gaucher said.

Much of February was dominated by snowstorms, along with systems bringing sleet and rain, but the start of March should be uneventful compared to those active weeks of precipitation.

Gaucher said, “We’re looking at a fairly quiet week.”
