Van Noy open to Pats return if cut by ’Fins

The Dolphins plan to release linebacker Kyle Van Noy if they cannot trade him soon, according to multiple reports.

Van Noy signed a 4-year, $51 million contract with Miami last year, including $31 million in guarantees. Cutting ties with Van Noy is expected to save the Dolphins $9.75 million in cap space ahead of a season when the salary cap will be reduced. Van Noy notched six sacks, two forced fumbles and 69 tackles last year, after establishing himself as an above-average starter over three-plus seasons in New England.

He has not ruled out signing with the Patriots, a source told the Herald, if he’s released.

In his final year with the Pats, Van Noy made 56 stops, forced three fumbles and posted a career-high 6.5 sacks. He primarily played outside linebacker after being acquired in a 2016 trade with Detroit, but also logged snaps at inside linebacker. With Miami, Van Noy made $15 million dollars compared to the $12.7 million he earned in New England.

Shortly after the Dolphins’ decision to cut ties was reported, Van Noy released a statement via the NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

The statement read: “I am surprised in their decision. As a captain, I gave my all to the team. I fought through a painful hip injury during the season, including spending a night in the hospital after a game. I was brought there to be a leader and I know my teammates looked up to and respected me. I am looking forward to making an impact on my next team, on and off the field.”

There are conflicting reports as to whether Van Noy, who turns 30 later this month, declined a pay cut before Miami opted to move him.
