Ipswich runs over Lynnfield

IPSWICH — With some hard-nosed football up front on both sides of the ball, Ipswich showed its grit in a dominating Cape Ann League victory.

Two forced turnovers in the first quarter allowed the offense to settle in as the Tigers pulled away with a convincing 33-7 win over rival Lynnfield at home Friday night.

“I am just really happy for the kids,” said Ipswich coach Kevin Fessette. “They came together and they played very physical. We played our style right from the get-go.”

The ground-and-pound attack was all Ipswich (4-0) needed in this one as it rushed for 259 yards with senior captain Cole Terry leading the way with 154 and a score to make it 26-0 with 4 minutes left in the third.

“It just demoralizes a team when you get smashed in the mouth every time,” Terry said about the way the offensive linemen played.

The run did open some play-action passes as Terry also rolled out for a 32-yard touchdown pass to senior captain Justin Bruhm in the second quarter to make it 12-0.

“(Terry) can throw. He can run. He kind of does it all, but he does it the right way and he always comes after it,” Fessette said. “Every day he shows up to practice and there’s no question he is going to show up and at least give you the effort. His talent and skill are there, but his heart and courage and stuff like that are even more impressive.”

Bruhm caught another pass for a 23-yard score from junior Aiden Arnold to make it 19-0 at halftime while also having an interception on Lynnfield’s opening drive.

“It just feels amazing,” Bruhm said about the pick. “It just really set the tone early in the game. They weren’t ready for that.”

The other turnover for the Tigers’ defense came to open the contest as senior Rowan Silva recovered the opening kickoff. After that, Ipswich marched down the field, capped by an Arnold 2-yard rushing score.

The rushing attack added another touchdown as Henry Wright scored in the fourth to make it 33-0.

The only score for Lynnfield (4-1) came late in the fourth as DJ Capachietti scored from 12 yards to put the Pioneers on the board, 33-7.
