Seniors lead Plymouth South past Scituate

- By Matt feld

In Plymouth South’s biggest game of the year, its seniors came to play.

Hunter Dean came through with a pair of second-half touchdowns while fellow captain Anthony Loranger tallied a key 35yard scoop and score as Plymouth South defeated Scituate, 27-22, on Friday night at Scituate High School.

With the win, Plymouth South will now take on North Quincy for the Patriot League Fisher crown next weekend.

“I am so proud of these guys,” Plymouth South coach Darren Fruzzetti said. “Hunter has been doing that for three years for us, and that’s what leaders do. Our seniors really stepped up tonight.”

The two sides were deadlocked at 14 late in the third quarter, but Dean broke the tie by engineering an 11-play, 65-yard drive, capped off by a 16-yard touchdown reception by Jack Condon that gave the Lions a 21-14 lead.

Scituate had a chance to take the lead midway through the fourth quarter as a safety trimmed the deficit to 21-16 and gave the Sailors the ball back. Loranger, however, came through with the defensive play of the night, sacking Sailors quarterback Henry Gates, picking up the ball and returning it 35 yards to give Plymouth South a 27-16 edge.

Scituate made one last effort as Keegan Sullivan plunged in from 2 yards out, but the Lions recovered the onside kick to seal the win.

“This is a terrific feeling,” Dean said. “We’re going for a league title. This puts us one step closer.”

It was the Sullivan show early as the junior rushed for 45 yards over eight plays, including a 1-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7. Sullivan then gave Scituate the lead with a nifty 68yard punt return but the Lions tied the game up before the half as Dean trucked in from 12 yards out to even things at 14.
